I've subconsciously gotten into the habit of touching the door with the back of my hand before closing it. Try that, I don't think it smarts as much as getting zapped on a finger.

You can also use a mist of 1 part fabric softener and 6 parts water to lightly spray the fabric of your seats once a month. This worked well for me with my old vehicles and left the car smelling "downy fresh".

The down side is you may have some little bear sitting your driver's seat trying to get snuggly...

I never seem to get one, but my wife gets 'hit' all the time. But, I do make a habit of grabbing the metal door frame as I climb out.

Some cars have these "anti-static automotive straps". I've been trying to find some online but no luck as of yet. I noticed a lot of cars in Europe have them. It's a little strap that simply hangs off the car/truck and touches the ground. I'm not sure how well it worked...

I thought the static is generated by the friction between AIR and CAR BODY.
I saw some big truck (explosive transportation) hang a metal chain from somewhere behind rear axes to ground.
Has anyone tried that?

I've resorted to closing the door with my knee if I remember.... of course, this only works if you are wearing long pants. That season has passed in Tucson so I guess I'm getting shocked for the next 6 months. Maybe I'll try the dryer sheet trick.

I think the battery is somehow wired directly to the driver's door

This thread is hilarious! I have been having this problem too, but I was either too ashamed or too afraid to mention it. (Afraid that all of my lights weren't grounded properly and I was grounding ALL of them when I get out and touch the door.) I like the suggestions too, they are great.

My suggestion doesn't solve the problem, but instead, "share's the love." When you get out of the truck, run around to the passenger door and touch your girlfriend as she get's out. Mine definitely loves it. She's in Australia for a semester. Connection??
