Stealth Reverse Backup Lights Installed - Lots of Pics!

Ok wiring gurus, I need some help please!

Got my lights installed and wired up finally today. Almost everything works. I wired them through a relay, tapped a reverse wire to power them and a SPST switch as a secondary trip. As of now, they work ONLY when in Reverse AND the switch turned on.

I wired as follows:

Add a circuit power to switch, wire tapped between those two points to feed Relay at terminal #30

Relay terminal #85 to ground

Relay terminal #87 out to lights

Switch to Relay terminal #86

Tap from reverse power to line between switch and #86


I think the last step is where I've got problems. It makes sense in my head though as power should be coming into #86 either from the reverse power or the switch, and in theory reverse should power #86 even if power's not coming downstream from the switch. However I know something is wrong here and hopefully someone can point out my mistake.

ETA: Figured out part of my problem. Thinking "oh, these are lights, i'll throw the add a circuit on the tail light circuit...' which is fine except that circuit is switched... The lights work as advertised, as long as the parking or headlights are on....So time to find a different one to tap power from.

2003-2005 rear bumpers

This bumper would be great if the light housing wasn't red. There is a lot of work involved just to make the red lights work, but making the housing White would really be sweet. That is what I would really want to mod into my 4runner. I mean, if you have the older bumper. 2006+ I have not seen a bad setup yet on this mod.

LED rear Tails, and white aux rear lights in a 2005 bumper. This is my goal. 2006 LED Tails are in the mail and should be here today. Now to get White Aux lights in the 2005 bumper. If this plan fails, I'm glad I found this thread.

One more resurrection for this thread........

I'm installing the rear backup light NV-534 discussed here. My question is what is necessary if I just want to install the lights to be 100% manually operated? I don't want them ON when in reverse unless I choose, BUT I do want to have to have the key in the ON position or to have to have the truck running for them to operate (safety precaution so not ON by accident during the day)

I bought the lights, a Daystar 20A amber switch that looks pretty nice and a 30A fuse box to install after the battery wire. I am gonna get 12G wire and upgrade to 100W H3 bulbs and that's it.... RIGHT?

Any other fuses, diodes, relays or add a circuits or anything else I'm missing that is needed? Sorry I know nothing about wiring or electrical installs.

If you don't need the switch, you won't need the switch and diode but you'll still need the relay. The 12v 30amp relay I bought at Pepboys for $8. You should be able to find the relay at any auto parts place. The relay is needed because thats what trips the lights to come on when you hit reverse. The switch is just there in case you want the lights to come on while the car is off. This past weekend I actually used the lights to light up the dark area while setting up my tent...worked well! :bigok:

Oh, just make sure that the relay that you purchase has the same amount of terminals on the bottom.

Wow this was a while ago. To be honest I don't remember. You should be able to find a 12v relay at your local auto parts store.

It should have at least 4 terminals so that you can do the following "The fused positive (red) wire goes directly to the relay (#30). The Yellow tapped wire goes to # 86 on the relay. You'll need to ground the relay (#85) and the lights (find some bolts). Terminal # 87 will be used to power your new lights."

Do a search on here for the fj cruiser foglight switch. If I recall correctly, people have used it for different things. Not sure why it wouldn't work.

Any 5 spade / 30A relay will work. Try to find a Bosch relay if you can.

And get a relay socket too.

Great mod. Very useful if you do any towing into the later hours.. Here's my set up.. also used 55w bulbs...

Also added 3W LEDs on sides
