Steam Cleaning Engine

I just purchased a 1999 4Runner SR5 and want to get it detailed. The place I'm going to Steam Cleans the Engines as part of their detailing process.

Here is what they say:
"Here at Pierre’s, we start by sealing all the components, degreasing entire motor, steam cleaned and finally completely sealed!"

Is it safe to have this done to the engine or should I pass? What should I watch out for?

^ Agreed! And, I didn't open your link but if they spray dressing all over it too, you don't want that sh*t either. Grab some Simple Green or your favorite degreaser, soak the sh*t out of it and go to town at the self serve car wash. I actually always clean my engines and underside of hood with the truck running.

What do they mean by "sealing all the components"? How do they do that?

I'm guessing they mean covering the electrical components like the alternator, coilpacks, etc so they don't get water in them, but that's just a guess.

getting the engine wet, is that a safe thing to do? should you cover any electrical components?

All I've ever done is:


cover fuse box with plastic bag
start engine
wet engine lightly
spray simple green--mostly on metal areas that show real dirt
wait 5 min
spray with hot water pressure hose at car wash
close hood and drive off

I do know first hand that that tire dressing crap with make all your hoses crack---it looks good, but the first thing i do is tell the dealer to steam it off or i do it myself immediately after buying

im with ripcord just spray the engine down yourself at the self carwash. but so far there is one thing your all forgetting...our radiators have plastic end caps. spraying them with cold or luke warm water after the motor has ran and completely warmed up you CAN crack it.... I've done it before with another vehicle. im not tryin to make anyone worry about it just sayin it is a possibility. but with the rest of the motor never had an issue sprayin it all down at the carwash without covering the fuse panel or having the motor run...just pop the hood spray it down
