Has anyone else needed to replace their steering rack? 90,000 miles on my 2011 SR5 and dealer is replacing the rack, saying it's leaking fluid from the boots. Doesn't seem like a common issue, just curious. Thanks.

At least a few of the members here who spend a decent amount of time off-road had to replace their steering racks. I can't be sure if it was for a specific component or the entire rack going bad, but as I remember the whole thing needs to go and it isn't cheap. Search shows more than a few instances of the problem coming up, but in most cases no follow-up or solutions were posted.

Thank you for the replies. I wondered if it had anything to do with offroad wear/tear. I didn't notice any leaks or performance drop off, so needing a replacement was a bit surprising. Luckily the cost is being covered under warranty.

Hey, seeking some advise here and this thread seemed most closely related to my issue.
I've got a groaning noise when I turn the steering wheel from side to side. It starts making noise with even the slightest turn to either side. Started suddenly--2013 TE with 43k miles. I did just return from a trip with a lot miles of very dusty dirt roads and some mildly technical bumpy terrain but nothing that I would think could damage anything.
Dealership says I need a new steering rack but I have no leaks and no noticeable performance issue from the steering, just the noise. The service manager said that since the noise is coming from the rack itself, and since it's a sealed unit, needs to be replaced.
I'm not much of an auto mechanic but what I've been able to read about steering racks going bad on these trucks, mostly on this forum, is that there's some performance issue that indicates the rack is bad.
Any advice short of replacing this expensive part would be much appreciated.

Few easy things to try first before a new rack.
1. Check the fluid level paying attention to hot/cold level and if it was low and you topped it up make sure air is bled from the system by turning the wheel a few times.
2. Change the PS fluid
3. Check and replace your serpentine belt

Thanks, yeah first thing i did was check the PS fluid level and it is good both cold and with the engine warmed up but I'll check the belt.

New member, can't start a new thread, but wanted to get an opinion on my steering rack. I replaced the bushings a couple months ago, trying to eliminate the odd rattle I feel in the steering wheel when I go over bumps at low speed while turning. Brand new main bushings and sway bar bushings and end links tightened things up a bit, but the rattle remains. Thinking about replacing the steering rack guide, per this thread, but wanted to run this by you folks first:
When I was replacing the rack bushings, I found a bunch of corrosion *underneath* the right bushing. See pics:

Will that scrape off? It tough to say what that is, but some misguided grease or engine oil + caked on dirt wouldn't be unusual in that location.

In the 3 page thread I think there might be a link toward the end of an easy way to check it from inside the cabin. Either way, the slip yoke is accessible through the DS wheel well. I fiddled with mine at one point.

I have this RAM set up for an iPad. I’m currently using six .5 inch screws
The screws are only grabbing into the carpet and not to metal
Does anyone know how big of screws I would need to hit actual metal

Do you have a picture of how bad it's leaking? This was a problem with the Tundras for a while, not so much on this platform.
We hit it with a wire brush but most of it didn't budge. We were worried about hitting it with a grinder because this crap was underneath the bushing and so we felt like it wasn't something on the surface, but rather a fault working its way thru from the internals. Still just not sure about it. =/
