Never had an Audi leather wheel peel or even remotely chip.
This was at Toyota Escondido
Mine was also peeling on the top, 2018 TRD OR. It started with around 17k on the speedo. I wasn't super stoked to say the least, shit, I had a $20k Element with 185k on it and had no steering wheel peeling. A $40k car shouldn't be doing this so soon! Or at all!
So I hit up the service advisor at Tustin Toyota thinking they'd tell me to pound sand BUT he said they have one in stock! He also told me it seems to be a problem with the wheel peeling on several models of Toyotas. He went ahead and warrantied it and 3 hours later I was on my way with a new steering wheel!

Wow what BS. They didn't consider this outside influence? Can you tell me who your service writer was?
I guess when they know the peeling is a problem they don't question it...
Service manager stated that it happens quite often on several model Toyota's.
My service writer is Alex Cruz, who I believe is also the Assistant Service Manager. He's a seems to be a good kid.

Well, I had a similar experience but apparently my warranty was expired so I decided to look for steering wheel restoration services also with an idea to put some wood on it. I found these guys, called woodensteeringwheels that helped me a lot. They basically can refurbish any wheel by putting some style to it and some custom feeling. If someone is interested in what they have made out of my old steering wheel, just DM me and I'll send you some pictures. I just thought this could be useful, hope it'll help in the future!

To all,
I am filing paperwork with small claims here in San Diego against Toyota in reference to the steering wheel peeling. I believe that this is more of a product defect than it is outside influence. If it was in fact outside influence, I do not feel that there would be this many owners(I understand this is a small forum) complaining about the same issue. Furthermore, it is clear that Toyota isn't supporting their owners in a consistent manner. I have gone through the Toyota process of working with my local dealer, opening a case twice with Toyota corporate, writing a letter, and threatening legal action. The time has come to follow through and I think what I am doing will be a good reference for anyone interested in getting their steering wheel replaced by Toyota with the same issues I am having.
I do however need some assistance. As with many things with large corporations, there is power in numbers when it comes to getting something like this done. I am asking that any owner that has had their steering wheel peeling to write a letter(maybe 2 paragraphs) detailing when the steering wheel started peeling, Toyota's response, and how you take care of your car along with you signing off on the letter. I will use this as my witness testimony if it even makes it to court. I think a judge might look at me and say that it might just be me. However, I think that a judge seeing myself and letters from 10 other owners with the same issue will show that this is not just negligence from the owner but possibly a defect.
It would also be very beneficial for any owners who have successfully had their steering wheel replaced to write a letter as well. This would show that there are inconsistencies from Toyota in how they honor their warranty with respect to the steering wheel.
This could either be a very successful case or a complete waste of my time. The bottom line is this is wrong and I want to exhaust all options before I give up on this. I think it will be challenging on my own but entirely plausible that this can be won with additional witness testimony via a letter. I will keep everyone updated on the forum as things move along and then you can do the same thing in your local jurisdiction if I/we are successful.

For reference: Basic Warranty-This warranty covers repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of any part supplied by Toyota, subject to the exceptions indicated under “What Is Not Covered” on pages 14–15.Coverage is for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, with the exception of wheel alignment and wheel balancing, which are covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
In my view, this is poor materials and is thus a defect from the manufacturer.

I installed a steering wheel cover that I bought from Amazon. I've installed 3 so far, including the one pictured below. It takes approximately 4-5 hours and it's very straight forward. I also like it because the steering wheel is a bit thicker and it's nicer to drive with.

I have a 2018 SR5 with less than 18k miles and the steering wheel is pealing as well, took it to the dealer and they took the pictures sent it to there reps and then came back to me with the Outside Influence being the factor. I told them that this is a known issue and that others have had the same problems and they said that Toyota has not received information regarding the issue previously and that there was nothing they would do. Every time I drive more of the steering wheel comes off, I get angry when I drive it.

Do these make a loud ringing noise when they are pealing?
That said, those of you with the peeling problem need to write a letter (registered) to Toyota outlining the issue and asking for a repair. I'd suggest that one letter is drafted, citing all of the people here with the issue and then have each one of you send that registered letter to Toyota.

Could not agree with you more hence why I’m requesting letters to be written. Power in numbers. I did speak to a lemon law attorney who actually thinks I have a case

If a lemon layer is willing to do a case then do it. It won't cost you anything and Toyota will likely throw money at you to go away. The lawyer will get 30/40% and the remainder will pay for the new wheel.
But let's face it. For several years I read complaints on the NHTSA database and the majority of complaints were incomprehensible ramblings. You need to write a coherent, to the point, unemotional letter Here are a few examples from NHTSA on how NOT to write a complaint:
"I LEASED A NEW 2016 VW GOLF. VW CLAIMED THE CAR GOT 25/35 MILEAGE. I AM GETTING 13/26 AND YET I AM A VERY CASUAL DRIVER. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO TWO VW DEALERSHIP A TOTAL OF FIVE TIMES. THEY ARE CLAIMING THAT THAT I ONLY DRIVE A FEW MILES A DAY, SO THE CAR DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO WARM UP AND THAT IS WHY I DO NOT GET THE STATED MILEAGE. IT'S A RIDICULOUS CLAIM. I FEEL LIKE THIS IS ANOTHER VW SCANDAL. I NEED TO ESCALATE THE RESOLUTION OF THIS ISSUE AS I HAVE PLENTY OF PROOF ON THE ISSUE. Each of these people may have a legitimate complaint (although the dealer is probably right on the first one), but they are written so badly as to be worse than useless.
