Steering Wheel Shake

Was there ever a clear resolution found to this issue? Specifically the vibration of the steering wheel when going over bumps. I have the same issue. 01 sr5 sport 4wd. driving in 2wd. around town or even on good roads, no issue. if I hit a bad bump, I get the vibration.

I will check out the link that was supplied and see what the results are for me.

That's going to be a front end issue - start grabbing stuff and wiggling it - you'll find it!
 
Well if this helps I replaced front strut,rear shocks and also did lbj. I figured I should start somewhere as the truck has 275k. I put bilsteins on. Smooth as glass now. 65-70mph all the shaking was eliminated. Hope this helps someone
 
I am dealing with the same vibration at 65-70mph. Looks like I will have my tires balanced and aligned to see if it helps.
 
in my vehicle it was the rear drive shaft shaking whole car

I had a shudder between 60-70 mph (not at 75). Rebalanced tires using Hunter. Nothing. But a check at the dealer showed clearly there was a lot of noise coming from rear drive shaft. Replaced that myself ($300 part + 4 bolts tightened at 54 lb/ft), shudder is gone.

Fact is there are a lot of things that can cause this. Best to get it in the air and have someone qualified evaluate it. Lots of stuff can go wrong at 200k miles.

Both universal joints on my 2WD partially froze and produced the same shake/shimmy at speed. I paid a Sparks/Reno driveline shop $90 to weld on new u-joints complete with grease fittings. Problem gone.

We had to drop the driveshaft to properly diagnose the issue.

Hey Steve: Did you ever correct your shimmy. I have a 2003 with the exact same issue. A shimmy every time I go over a bump. Had wheel alignment but still there. Tires are new. Mechanic suggested struts. Doesn’t matter what speed I’m going when I drive a rough road it shimmies at ever crack in the asphalt. Like you described it’s side to side movement that is very abrupt but quickly stops when pavement is even and no sign of repairs. When I refer to cracks in the asphalt it’s those repairs that are across the asphalt versus along and have been filled but still create a bump. Please help.

Post up your alignment numbers. We need to see 'after' results... (and you'll probably want to post this in the 4th gen sub forum) Could also be worn front end bushings.

Mine did this too. I replaced all the ball joints and that stuff. It was a slight amount of play in the inner cv axle joint. It also shook under heavy acceleration. Hard to diagnose. I imagine thats why your dust seal began to leak also. Mine dripped for a couple days too. It was just cockeyed though not bad. Tapped it into it's proper home no drip. Smooth sailing no shake. You can grab on the joint housing and check for play
 
I replaced the struts with Monroe’s from RockAuto. They looked a lot more beefy then the ones I took off. I’d post a pick but not sure how. Fixed my shake . Thanks
