Steering Wheel Shake

I went to Toyota today and got a re-balance with the taweka adapter - apparently the tires were out of balance. This should cure my >60mph shake in the steering wheel

However, over bumps and holes in the road it still jars/shudders the steering wheel a bit. I have not welded the steering column yet - I guess thats next on the list
 
OP, I'm in the same boat as you and it's bizarre. I replaced everything you have replaced, and most recently did the steering rack bushings even though my OEM rack is only about 7 years old.

It certainly tightened things up, but the shake isn't gone. I've had my tires balanced again and again, but that didn't do much.

Do you have a lift too? I've just sort of resigned myself to that just being how my old truck drives because I've made a hell of an effort at this point.
 
I'm getting the same issue. Just bought a 97 3.4L 4WD and SW shakes at 65mhp. Wheels are fairly new, replaced by previous owner.
 
curious as to whether or not you have a lot of play at the front of the driveshaft from the transfer case yoke - my staked nut has obviously loosened and needs to be tightened on the output shaft bearing as I can move the driveshaft almost 3/8" up and down - I think this is the source of my 65mph vibration...
 
I have the same problem. 97 2wd all stock. shimmy between 60-70 anything above or below its smooth as glass. I've done wheel balance and it seems to take care of if for a short time. Rotors and pads are new from Toyota. I've been chasing it for yrs.

This shouldn't make a difference in 2wd though?

If instead of a shimmy it is a vibration, you need a new prop shaft... Its an issue that only the 2WD's have (different rear prop shaft design from the 4WD's)

Have any of you guys considered wheel bearing play as a culprit? I only bring it up because often when there's a wheel bearing issue up front, it will go away during turns, because there's different forces being exerted on the surfaces, races, etc.

It doesn't seem like WB play would be enough to shake the steering wheel, but perhaps the symptom is being misinterpreted? Sort of like my recent front end rebuild. I did the front wheel bearings because I was SURE the noise sounded and felt like front. Turned out to be rear.

yeah - the output shaft of the transfer case is the front of the rear driveshaft - my output shaft bearing is loose (haven't fixed it yet) - and I'm almost positive that is my vibration... same as a bad front joint.
 
Phattyduck I don't think it's in the drive line. Going down the freeway if I pop it in neutral it still does it until I get that sweet spot. Drive shaft isn't really turning in neutral

The drive shaft should be driven by the rear wheels in neutral - everything behind the transmission is still turning the same speed.

Ah that makes sense now - thanks. How can I check for play?

How can you tell the bearing is loose? I've been suspicious of that on my truck too. That's a difficult fix isn't it
 
see the post directly above about wiggling the front of the driveshaft up and down.. and I haven't fixed mine yet! (busybusy since I discovered it.)
