Steering Wheel vibration

IFS rigs aren't really prone to death wobble you'd see with SFA; mostly people -- including myself -- feel the out of balance wobble. You're correct in what you're suggesting, though I'll say there are far more variables than that. LCA bushings, road conditions and even settings on the alignment machine. For example, I've had good results when techs turn off "smart balance" on the Hunter machines.

All good info still learning here. Keep it rolling! (No pun intended)

Bought my 18 sr5 two weeks ago. Drove it back home 3 hours on the highway, no issues. Got new k02s put on, stock size...and vibe city. Had them rebalanced at discount tire and it was better, but still there. Headed back tomorrow for road force.

Thanks for the ammunition

K02’s are garbage. I rode on them for 2000 miles and got rid of them. Worse tires I have ever driven on in my life!

I have found that if the wheels are put on by hand rather than with impact wrench, and torqued on the ground I have much less shake than if dealer/shop does what they want to where you cant see how they do it.
Local tire shop does my rotations and road force balance and once they started doing it in front of me by hand and torque on the ground, I get less vibes.
Read here sometime ago about tightening one all the way causes wheel to "lean to that bolt" kind of thing.

Had dealer do alignment recently and balance with the hoka adapter but they must have impacted them on as I have a good deal of vibration now.

Just what seems to work best for me,
X

It’s the tire balancing, not the torquing.

Update.

Road force, by someone who knew what they were doing fixed it. Smooth as silk now.

Hopefully it lasts. I've had k02's on 3 different vehicles and have had nothing but good things to say about them.

My experience with my truck is that rotating my tires will either eliminate the shake or reduce it. I had zero shake with the OEM tires. Switched to Falken Wildpeak ATs and got a little shake. Rebalance fixed it for awhile but it slowly came back. Rotated my tires and it went away for a couple thousand miles. I’ve repeated this a couple of times. When rotating the first time, I noticed that my drivers front was wearing unevenly on the inside edge. I’ll be replacing the tires pretty soon so I’ll get an another alignment done then.

Interesting to note, I installed a 1.75/1 lift a year or so ago and drove it about 3k miles before getting alignment. During those 3k miles, I did not have any shake.

2021 TRD Pro

For what it is worth, i put 5k miles on my 2021 TRD Pro and had no issues. After first service, the tires were rotated, and now i have the steering shake. Still have the stock tires.

The tire balance on you rear tires were always off. Now that they go moved to front, that imbalance shows up as steering wheel shake.

You either try to balance or replace the front tires. Or move the tires back to the rear where you won't feel it in the steering wheel.

Yep, me too

With stock tires on my 2017 I experienced steering wheel shake once at about 55mph but it was so severe I stopped to see if I had a tire going flat as it had never happened previously. Soon after (about 3-weeks ago) I purchased new Cooper AT3 4S and got the shake pretty much all the time. Shake starts around 50-70 to varying degrees. I've had the tires rebalanced 6 times at 4 different shops, including a road force balance today. It is a bit better after the RF balance, but still not right. I bought the 4R new and it only has 34k mi on it now. I don't do real off-roading, just paved and gravel roads. The Coopers are stock size and are mounted to stock Toyota SR5 alloy wheels. Rest of truck is stock except for a set of AirLift bags in the rear for towing our 2,300lb camper. I just scheduled for an alignment and suspension check at our local off-road shop but the soonest appointment is almost a month out. I'm hoping an alignment will resolve it or that they find a suspension component is going bad. The wheel shake is not gonna be acceptable long-term. I'll update when I know more.

Surprised you lived with it for so long.

First answer is to ask the tech to give you the road force values that the machine gives out. That will give you some direction where to go. No amount of re-balancing will fix a wheel/tire assembly with extreme road force.

Does increasing positive caster rectify this? I understand we have limitations with stock UCA’s but purportedly with some aftermarket models we are hearing of 4.5 degrees positive caster.

I am running right around 4* of caster on aftermarket UCAs and I still have the shakes. They come and go. Some days it's quite noticeable, some days barely and some days not at all. There are too many factors in play.

I think that overall, caster increase can help, but it's not likely to be your one-stop solution.

Hasn't been that long, did it once (first time) about 6-months ago with stock tires. Figured it was time to change them out so 3-weeks ago I got the Coopers. That's when the real fun started. The vibration is much more frequent and predictable at certain speed range and also seems that certain sections of paved highway can make it worse.

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't get the values of todays road force test but will on the next one after I get an alignment and suspension component check. I'll post them when I do.
