stereo and speaker options 2005

I have a 2005 4runner and for years have been listening to the same crappy sound system and dealing with that horrible tape adapter to play my iphone/ipod. LOL.

I plan to keep the truck a little longer and want to improve the sound system.

I don't think I want a full nav system as the options I saw in a search keep pointing to the pioneer nav hu and the prices are saw are a bit high for what I want. ($800 for hu alone)

So lets say I don't need a full nav display etc.

What are my options to replace the speakers and I assume I would also need to replace my stock hu to get better sound and have ipod/iphone connectivity?

I do not want to cut into my dash, so I would rather not incorporate that as a package option. (I saw the in dash speaker in a search)

I do not believe I have a JBL as it does not have the logo on the current HU.
Mine looks like this: http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee363/mnt4r/Entertainmentbefore.jpg

I know there are a lot of options, I'm just looking for the best option for my needs.

I can do the research on the components, maybe someone can just say I need X, Y, Z to have a good system that's pretty simple install wise. (I can do the install myself...I think..)

Thanks,
Ant

for speaker replacement , i suggest the alpine type-s, they are good factory replacement for people who are running the power off the radio.
radio wise, pioneer DEH-X6600BT, got basic unit with usb and bluetooth. but if you want hd radio(cd quality sound) the DEH-X8600BH is good. if you dont want the cd slot on the face the DEH-X9600BHS looks cleaner. im spoiled by the DEH-80PRS at the moment, basically a better version of what i used to have DEH-P860MP.
