Stereo Speakers for my 4runner

My 4runner is 15 years old this year and the rear door speakers are starting to distort.

I need your help.

I want to know what members have had the best luck with on sound and fitment for replacement speakers for the 4runner.

I don't want to add a speaker box or any additional amplifiers. I want to replace the old factory speakers with something current that will sound good and drop in.

I am running an Eclipse double din navigation head unit that is rated at 25 watts.

Let me hear your suggestions. What sounds great and drops in?

6 1/2" front & 5 1/4" rears.

I went onto Crutchfield and found out my options. I ended up going with Rockford Fosgate Prime's. I used 6-3/4 components in the front, and 5-1/4 in the rear. The front do not have a crossover to mount; they have resisters on the speakers to take care of that. I had no issues at all installing the fronts. In the rear everybody talks about having to make an adapter plate to fit bigger speakers, but that's not the case. These 5-1/4 fit into the factory plate just fine for me. Took me about 3 hours for the entire install. The sound is so much better.

I would highly highly recommend Infinity Reference speakers.

You can put 5.5" in the rear doors and 6.5" components in the front.

Their reference series are lower wattage than Kappas but still sound great between 20-50 W RMS.

Have you considered an "Alpine Universal Power Pack" ?
It is $130 online and will bring your system up to 45W RMS, really make things sound great. Just look at the reviews.

It's not required but I would also suggest running new 14G copper speaker wire if you do the power pack.

Also it is only the size of small TV remote.

Edited- not sure they make 5-1/2 speakers. I also second the Alpine Power Pack, it's pretty nice. I picked a used one up off eBay for $47 a couple weeks ago. I put it where the factory amp was behind the head unit.

I have Infinity Reference front and rear speakers with Alpine power pack and they sound great. Alpine power pack install was easy with my Alpine stereo, Plug and play.

If you head unit has a maximum out put of 25 watts RMS, I would look at getting 2ohm load speakers for maximum watts. If you get a 4 ohm speaker, you are only going to get around 15-18 watts out of the speakers.

Ok it doesn't really work as you say. If for example an head unit is rated for 25 W RMS x 4 @ 4-ohm and you are connecting say 40W RMS stable speakers but they are 2-ohm per speaker, then your amp will try to drive 200 W RMS instead of the 100 W RMS it was designed for. Some amps will auto-shut off to protect themselves. Many consumers (including some of my friends) have mistaken this for a broken amp or crappy amp when in reality the person doing the configuration (choice of equipment) and install did not know what they were doing and make a bad setup.

A specific stereo is usually rated for X Watts RMS at either 2 or 4 ohm load, or both. You will want to really read the head unit specifications before running four 2-ohm speakers.

If you have a stereo rated for 25W x 4 RMS @ 4 OHM, say 100W RMS at full volume and you connect four 2-ohm speakers then your amp will be near full wattage at about 1/2 way on the volume nob.

It will basically be trying to drive 200 W even though it is designed for 100 W.

That is why if you have a home stereo that says it takes 8 ohm speakers you can connect 4 ohm speakers and they will play music until you turn up the volume and eventually fry the amp. It will also sound much worse, along with not being able to turn the volume up to anywhere near 2/3 cleanly.

Another vote for infinity reference. I love mine. I bought kappas for my camaro back in high school and have been a fan of infinity ever since. They really sound great at their price point. I have infinity reference in my rig now just running off the alpine HU with no amp and they sound great especially since I added in the infinity basslink.

Infinity... The wife has had some reference in her car for longer than I've known her. Sound quality is most excellent.

I appreciate the advice. As for the power pack. Not really interested in doing adding that. nor amps or a space consuming bass box. If there is some thing that mounts under the seat, I might entertain that idea.

I hardly ever "rock out" anymore. The volume never gets above 92 to 94 decibels.

And lately, I have been listening to a lot of talk radio.

I never drive with the windows down unless there is an obnoxious odor around.

I just want a clean crisp full range sound, drop in and compatibility with the 4runners acoustics.

So the general consensus is infinity speakers? I have been reading about the carbon fiber speaker cones. How is that for full range sound?

The power pack can be mounted inside the dash behind the stereo. It is really small.

As for the infinity speakers I just think the reference series is one of the best ones you can run at 20W. Kappas are a no go at such low wattage.
