Stereo Upgrade/ Satellite Radio Help Needed

I've got a 2004 4Runner Sport Edition that has the standard radio. I want to go with an integrated Sirius system with the stock radio.

It is my understanding that the 2005 and up single disk and JBL 6-disk radios are the only ones that can use a direct connect system. So, I was wondering if I can put a later model JBL six-disc changer in and then go with either Toyota or after-market kit.

In particular, I saw a guy selling a 2007 JBL synthesis head and the Sirius kit here. Will this work as well?

Unfortunately there isn't anything for your radio.... and upgrading to the JBL system is mroe complicated than just switching radios. You'll need the amp as well, and then you are talking quite an expense. You'd be better off either swapping for an aftermarket deck or just getting an external Sirius tuner and mounting it somewhere. You can use an FM modulator or get an interface from VAIS tech that gives you an auxilary input.

Thanks, I figured that was the case. I already have an external unit that I am using and don't really like the non-user friendly set-up.

The other option I am looking at is putting in an OEM NAV, which has a better interface with the touch screen and the steering wheel controls. Cost is not so much an issue as compatibility and seamlessness.

If cost is not an issue I would look into an aftermarket nav. You can integrate the steering wheel controls as well and you'll have a much better sounding setup than anything factory could ever offer.

Kenwood DNX7100 ... navigation is flawless and is done by Garmin. Nice easy user-friendly interface... Tilt screen and is the easiest to bypass for in motion Video... I think retail is $1499.

Another cool unit is the Pioneer AVIC-D3. It'll blend in very well with the factory to because you can change the button illumination colors as well as the user interface. The downfall is that its a DVD based nav, meaning you can only either have a DVD/CD in or the navigation disc... so to use nav you have to have the disc in. It is also a fixed position screen, meaning you can't adjust it to fix glare or just provide a better viewing angle. Retail is $999

Installation on Navigation runs around $150, Steering wheel control is normally about $75 while the interface runs around $90 and your dash kit and wiring harness will set you back around $30.

I would also consider the Eclipse AVN 6610 series. Eclipse makes some of the units for Toyota so the unit should be much more compatible with the stock connectors and controls.

A company making radios for a car does not make it any more compatible than another.

My store dropped eclipse about 2 years ago because we got tired of warranty issues. It's also a DVD based nav like the Pioneer... The difference is the eclipse is a dual dvd drive but DVD based nav tends to be a bit slower. I don't like DVD based nav for the fact that no matter what you do to protect a disc, it still somehow gets scratched. A new disc is the upwards of $200 I think.

A sat-ready Scion unit should be a easy swap. I put one in my wife's '06, and will be doing the Sirius install in a week or 2.

I can vouch for the DNX7100....click on the link in my signature for the install. I'm getting ready to use all the features of this unit by replacing the stock JBL speakers and amp with new equipment. Either way...good luck with your install!

I recommend the DNX 7100 also. Just put one in my '05 and it's awesome!
