Stereo Wiring Question

Greetings,

I'm in the middle of replacing my stock stereo, and the colors for the ACC/Constant 12v/Ground do not match up to the service manual colors, nor what I've found online.

Ive got the speakers sorted out, heres what I'm left with:

# 1 is white with a black stripe
# 2 is red with a green stripe
# 3 is green, and a random band of red

# 4 is black with a clip- this was not connected to the radio.

Could this black one be the ground, meaning that the old stereo was not grounded? I would suspect that 1,2, or 3 would be the ground, unless for some reason the stock stereos were not grounded.

Any help much appreciated!

Sure wish it was that easy... Having looked that over, almost none of the colors in my harness match up. Can't seem to make clear sense out of the wiring diagram either:

The R-G and B-W are the + power connections, and the ground is the W-B at the bottom... Is it possible I have a replacement wiring harness? Off to the store for an Ohm meter, been needing one anyway. Its the extra black wire that wasn't plugged in thats got me scratching my head...

Make sure you test the wires both with ignition "on" and "off", as some wires will only be powered with the key on (or in access. pos.). Plus you may have a lead going to an antenna. A ground wire could always be separate from the others, like a short one from the radio chassis to the dash framing. Just thoughts to consider--I don't know the 1st Gen wiring personally.

Spend $12 and buy the wiring harness that plugs into this and then is color coded for your new radio.. simple..

I checked around town first for an adapter harness, but nobody had one so I opted for a splice. An interesting thing happened when checking the wires- the green wire from the harness, which I believe to be the ACC wire, gets power in ACC but only with the lights on (Parking lights or headlights).

Anybody heard of something like this before?

Check the link I posted - green is your "illumination" wire, turns on the stereo backlight when your headlights are on.

Yup, green is definitely the illumination wire. For the record for anyone down the line who comes across this thread, lessons learned: yes, there are indeed 13$ harnesses if you look around online enough (the few places I checked around town and online were in the 40$ range, hence the splicing).

The way my rig's wiring set-up is, as per the photo in the first post in this thread: Green is illumination, which I capped off as it was not needed per the requirements of the Kenwood stereo. The white with black stripe is the ground, the red with green stripe is ACC, and the standalone black wire with a connector is the full time 12v (which was not connected to the tape deck, meaning the deck was receiving power from the ACC & Illumination wires....)

Unless this truck at some point was fully rewired, it seems to me there is the possibility for a large variance in what colors the service manual references, colors that stereo websites reference as the stock colors in the stereo wiring, and what you might actually find in a harness. Some of my initial confusion was that the D-bag at Autozone told me to use the AC setting on the multimeter I bought there, which blew a fuse immediately in the meter the first time I used it... I'm learning a bit more about electricity daily...

So, JaredB3000 is exactly right - I'm digging into the dash of my own 1985, and my wiring doesn't match the stuff at the12volt.com or Stereowiringdiagram.info. Because every once in a while I actually search before I throw up a question , I found this thread. And it appears my wiring colors are similar or identical to Jared's and nobody else on the web has any idea what they are either. So, I broke out the voltmeter and did it the hard way.

Black with white stripe - constant power
Red with green stripe - switched
Dark green - illum
White with black stripe - ground
Green with black stripe - driver speaker ground
Green with yellow stripe - driver speaker pos
Green - passenger ground
Green with red stripe - passenger pos
