Still Lurking in SF

Hello all, I thought it was high time to thank you for this site and the fantastic information it provides (along with hours of productivity-killing surfability!)

This deadly combination has put a significant dent in my pocketbook.

I'm in the middle of a project whereby I pay a large sum of money to swap a diesel engine into the legendary 3rd gen 4Runner platform. Why? Well, the answer to that would depend on who you ask:

  • Brother - "you must have more money than brains"
  • Crunchy hippy type friend - "So you can run bio-diesel! Far out!"
  • Self - "an economical and torquey diesel in the perfect mixture of urban family hauling and capable off road vehicle! I've always loved this truck anyway."
  • Wife - "I don't want to talk about it."

That was bad enough. THEN I got hold of this site and all the evil truck porn about lifts, tires, bumpers, clear corners, LED tails, tinting, and all that other Deviltry, and hept saying to myself, "Self, you might as well do that now while it's ripped apart, and besides, if you don't there is a good chance you'll not get the chance to do it later without another big brawl with The Boss"

Luckily, I listened to Self and am now the nervous anticipating owner-to-be of a '97 Black SR5 with a diesel swap, SS7.2, 265/75/16 BFG AT, shrockworks bumper and a few other odds and ends.

I will post a build in the 3rd Gen section later as it gets put together, but for now it is simply too scary for me to even look at.

I should mention that I am not doing the work, as I have neither the time, skills, or tool set (I hear it must be at least as good as Spicoli's dad's set of tools). So instead, I'm breaking my butt trying to earn enough to cover my dream truck.

I plan on using this as my camping, fishing, and Tahoe truck as well as my family hauler, so I went for keeping it moderate enough to drive it around San Francisco on a daily basis, while giving it enough brawn to get me to those mountain lakes off the beaten path.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Peter a.k.a. Kook

That sounds like an amazing truck overall, you'll definately have to post pics of it. For the sakes of us here I'm sure there's more than just me that will be happy you listened to your "self" and there is one more cool T4R out there to enjoy.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks! I will definitely post pics, but would like to get further along so I can show the before and after. The "before" is pretty rough. We were looking for a high mileage donor vehicle with good bones, and it shows. On the plus side, the "after" should be dramatic (I hope...)

It seems there is a relatively large Bay Area contingent, so hopefully I'll be able to hook up with them on some outing and learn a few things about trail riding.

It would pass the smog without any issues I think (I spoke to an emissions referee), but being that this is a '97 it would be exempt anyway. From this year '98 and newer diesels will require smogging.

Please throw up some DETAILED pics of your truck! I saw a pic with the intercooler just chillin there but I want more, looked like a great truck from the pics i saw.

San Francisco Member here too!!

You'll see me lurking at Northstar-at-Tahoe this Winter.

I've been to Hollister, Frank Raines & Prarie City for offroading.

My Truck isn't built like yours.

@Kaiser - I will try to post more pics, but the conversion work is still being completed and the truck is far from home. Good catch on the intercooler! I was hoping it could be top mounted utilizing the hood scoop from a later model 4Runner (actually making it functional!), but it just wouldn't work out.

@Kenny - I think I saw pics of you and some others at Hollister some time back? The trip where somebody hit the water hole a little too fast and pushed in the radiator. Were you on that trip?

Looking forward to joining you sometime - my wheeling mainly has revolved around camping so far, but I'd like to learn a bit more and see what the new rig (and me) are capable of!

Peter
