Stock muffler

Where can I buy a stock muffler for cheap? My old stock muffler was all rusted so I bought a 24" muffler, dynomax I think, but it's still a little too loud. Any place online with good prices?

Im fairly certain magnaflow makes a stock muffler. Your best, simpliest and most likely cheapest bet is just to go to to a good muffler shop in your area and ask them to install a stock replacement. Most likely they'll have them in stock and you wont have to pay shipping or worry about which one you're going to buy online.
 
Walker has a replacement that is suppose to flow better and is quiet. I'm running a 17" turbo style muffler. It has a slight rumble to it. Nothing like a MF, which I had once.
 
How about if I buy a resonator? What's a good brand and what size do I need?is there even room for one if I have a 24" muffler?

A resonator will quiet it down a little. I needed to quiet a Polaris Ranger that I use for a camera vehicle for film use. My muffler guy turned me from a resonator to a glass pack muffler. It really knocked down the sound.

You could remove the tailpipe after it turns out to the side and add the glass pack to it. OR remove the tailpipe before the turn and use a longer glass pack and come straight out the back. I will caution you about coming out the back, you will have more exhaust coming in the back window and if you wheel it will probably drag. Backing up with it out the back can also get packed with dirt, rocks or snow.

You may have enough room to move the muffler forward and add the glass pack right after it, before the axle.

interesting, I thought glass packs increased sound. What kind of glass pack would you recommend? A link would be helpful, thank you.
 
Bummer you dont like the dynomax

maybe i dont notice it anymore. Another option is welding a tundra resonator behind it. Sounds good an reduces the sound.

Glass Packs do reduce the sound. I was amazed how much quieter my ATV was. (it is pretty built up, turbo, fuel, intake) Most people use them on their "hot rod" to make it sound mean. They are much more quiet than open pipes. A resonator is a perforated pipe inside a larger pipe. A glass pack is the same but has fiberglass in between the two pipes. They both are straight thru design.

As far as model and brand? I don't think it matters. They are pretty much the same.

I installed a Walker stainless steel stock replacement muffler on my sister's truck. Fitment was perfect, quality was top notch, and it sounds almost exactly like stock. Just a scosche louder. I got it from RockAuto for $155.

You can also get a Bosal stock replacement that is NOT stainless steel for $119. Although Bosal might not have been the OEM producer of your 4Runner's original muffler, they do make a lot of OEM stuff, and it would be exactly like the muffler that came on your truck from the factory.

These are definitely an "install it yourself" job. Very easy, just a couple bolts. I doubt you'd get a muffler shop to do the job with new parts for less than $120.

I'm goina get rid of my stock muffler, put a small air tank there for a air horn and install a 2 1/2" SuperTrapp in the tail pipe location.

Do you guys have a link to a resonator or glass pack that will work on my 4runner? I thought again about buying a stock muffler but even the ones on the internet are $400! :wow2:

Any glasspack from any auto parts store. You will need to assess the length by where you are going to mount & where you can mount it.

The easiest spot would be before the last bend that ports the exhaust out the side. This would send the exhaust, and sound, straight out the back. The big downsides would be, The exhaust may be more prone to be sucked back into the hatch window when opened, It may sound louder with the window down and I would drag it on lots of obstacles, even back it into stuff.

You can buy one and just hold it up the the existing tail pipe and have someone rev the engine. Then you should be able to tell if it's going to work for you.

Digging up old threads rather than start a new. I tried searching for my issue but I didn't see any.

So a few months back, my brother gave me his 01 4runner when I moved back to NJ from NYC. It's a V6 AWD SR5. The truck is LOUD. It sounds modded, but not in a good way. Before I take it in and get exhaust work, I wanted to check with other owners on the forum how loud a stock 4runner is. He said he doesn't remember it being that loud when he first got it but he can't be sure. He's had a hole welded shut before. If I press the gas even a little bit, the drone is loud enough that I have to raise my voice to keep a conversation. I imagine there are other holes but before I just replace the system, I'd like to find out what I should expect in terms of how quiet it actually should be.

He starts driving around 7:00. Is your car this quiet or did he cut out the drone in post processing?

The way mine sounds, there has got to be some holes or a leak somewhere if your car is nearly silent. It passed inspection recently (emissions) and the only recent code it threw was P0446. A new gas cap fixed it for about 1k miles, now it's back on.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
 
im running the walker exhaust from the 2 cats and the cat back which is nice and quiet from rockauto so I can recommend those and for fitment and as close to stock sound as you could get.

mine started to rust out pretty bad (the flanges) and started leaking everywhere so it had to be done

as far as the code when a leak got bad enough between the two cats it threw a low cat efficiency code but I think 446 is evap which if your gas cap is new might be the one of the hoses that go to the canister, the canister itself maybe make sure your filler neck isn't rotted but get under the truck and see if you smell any fumes or visually see anything
 
I just installed a Walker cat back exhaust that I bought off rock auto (non stainless) and it is very quiet and seems to be well built. I also bought all new rubber insulators, I'm very happy with the results.
