Stock Tire Differences

Can anyone tell me why some 4th Gens came stock with Dunlops and some with Michelins? Was it a trim thing?

To be honest I am not sure. I drive a 2008 4Runner SR5 and mine came with the Bridgestone Dueler HT tires that suck. In the process of upgrading mine to either BFG TA KO's or Goodyear Duratracs.
 
I believe it's simply a matter of tire availability as they rolled down the assembly line. I have the DumbFlop and they are by far the worst tire I've ever had on any of my 3 T4R's.
 
Mine is a 2003 SR5, ofcourse it has a new set of Dunflops when I bought it certified. But I happen to see a pic from the first owner, the tires were Michelin Cross Terrains. The spare is an unused Michelin CT, so though SR5 is the cheapest trim it can come out brandnew with Michelins...
 
Hmmm. My '08 SR5 came new with Michelin CTs and I love 'em! A local Toyota dealership in Sacramento somehow got it from a Toyota dealership in Reno, NV and I've wondered if the stock tires these things come with might be of regional consideration- the Michelin CTs seem the most reasonable of the three tires (Michelin, Dunlor or Bridgestone) to come stock on a vehicle sold in a heavy snowfall location in the States.

Hell, or maybe I'm just looking too far into it. Just occurs to me that there is a more likely explanation than pure chance...
 
The unused spare on my 03 Limited is a Dunlop. So I suspect the original set of tires were Dunlops as well.

I bought this T4R used, and the dealer had installled 4 new Michelin CTs. Great all season tire (imho) that I run in the snow with no problems.

Had I bought this new, I would have insisted on Michelin CTs. The factory installed tires on most new vehicles do not typically have a long tread life.
 
Don't have a definite answer to your questions but I bet it's something to do with where the trucks are being sold. Like my 06 SR5 had the bridgestones. I bet the up north ones have something more along the "all-season" lines (Mich CTs?)
 
I dont think there is any rhyme or reason, I saw 4Rs with all 3 types at the same dealership. Most Limiteds had the CTs, most SEs had the AT20s, and most SR5s had the HTs in my area anyway but Ive seen all 3 with each tire so I think it might just be whatever they grabbed first?
 
I believe it has to do with the size of the wheels. Dunlops on the 16" (stock SR5), Michelin on the 17" (option SR5 and SE). Every SR5 I've seen in our fleet (some 16" some 17") is equipped that way. My 09 TE came with the Dunlops (no more). I don't think that Michelin makes a 265/70-16, ergo the Dunlops. Just my .02 worth.

All Sport Editions to my knowledge came with Dunlop AT20. I think the SR5 and Limited came with either Bridgestone Dueler H/T, Dunlop AT20 or Michelin CrossTerrain. IIRC, the 18" rims were only Bridgestone Dueler H/T or Michelin CrossTerrain.

It's probably a batch thing from the suppliers.

What's up, fellow Carmichaelite(?)?!

This one makes a lot of sense. Anyone get a setup outside of this logic?

Mines are 17" Duelers as well and I have an SR5 . In the process of upgrading to Hankooks Dynapros. Can't stand these stock tires anymore.
