LOVE the build. +1 on the 285 duratracs, probably the best looking beefy tire I've ever seen on our trucks. I have seen you all over IG, now I can put a t4r face to that name! Haha, I'm in AZ too so I recognize a lot of your locations! I'm heading up to flag next weekend for the last MBAA race of the season! Hopefully I can get some wheeling in too

was your sisters jeep 4x4? seems like you go off roading by yourself alot, which is great. are you not afraid to get stuck or anything? i just recently bought a 4th gen, but i have no friends who off-roads. Been meaning to go out, but hearing stories like do not head out alone blah blah, makes me stay home. i want to go out on an adventure. btw i have a 2wd...i know should have invested in a 4x4. :bash:

Her Jeep is 4X4 but on the roads we drove in Death Valley we never had to engage it. I have never agreed with the "never go out alone" motto that gets thrown around. I like to adventure a LOT and if I always waited around for a friend to also go I would miss out on a LOT.

That being said, pretty much everything Liquidmantis said, I do. I don't attempt things that I am not sure I can do while alone. Off-roading while alone is not the time to push your limits. I also carry extensive recovery and survival gear in case I get break something and cant get back. I also always tell my wife my route and make sure she knows where that is in case I don't come home.

Definitely use common sense though. Most people that get stuck and need recovery are the people who barrel into unfamiliar deep mud pits or try to use speed to get over obstacles rather than technique.

Lastly if you do go out alone, make sure you have a plan for 3rd party recovery. If you don't have a friend you can rely on who has a rig capable of recovery, have a couple of tow companies in your phone who do that kind of thing. You don't want to be trying to google tow companies after you are already stuck

Thanks! I am a HUGE fan of the Duratrac. I have those on all my vehicles and they have never let me down. There is some great wheeling in AZ for sure. I am hoping to try some trails down around PHX this summer/fall

I think you need more wrenches :wow2:

In all seriousness, you probably do have more wrenches than you need (for the 4Runner at least). Toyota uses a pretty common set of sizes so if you pack those ones (8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24mm) plus anything you used for aftermarket accessories you should be laughing.

The photo only shows one shackle. A second one would be handy for the other end of the strap.

Haha yeah it's a lot of wrenches but I wheel with a lot of different rigs that I figure may use the sizes that aren't used on my 4Runner so I just carry the entire set. And sometimes ratcheting makes your life SO much easier but then other times they won't work at all so I carry both types. Appreciate you posting the common sizes on the 4R though as I haven't really paid attention as to which ones get used a lot while I am working :rockon:

As far as the shackle I forgot to post I have a shackle mounted to my hitch which I can remove the D-Ring and use it elsewhere if I need to strap to the front. I will update the post to reflect that.

Unless you are carrying on your person, a pocket knife and multitool come in handy. I have a rubber mallet in my tool kit for banging on things I don't want marred. I also have an optical temperature gauge to watch for signs of excess heat in brakes, hubs, tires, etc. And spare fluids.

My first aid kit is quite extensive. Being as I was fire/ems for 10+ years my first aid kit is top priority. Also depending on where you travel, hand/ body warmers and water purification system.

Probably a good idea to have a dedicated knife and multi-tool in my kit. I have an "adventure backpack" that permanently has those are many other items that I take anytime I go hiking or canyoneering or biking or whatever but there are times I 4-Wheel and I don't take that pack. I also only take my mallet when there is camping involved but that is a probably a good item as well

I hear you on first aid kits. That small kit is just dedicated to the rig but anytime I will be camping, biking, kayaking (basically anything in addition to wheeling) I throw my bigger, more extensive first aid kit in the rig. I have a few packs of hand warmers but they reside in my adventure backpack rather than my truck so I have them on my person when adventuring.

I would love to get one of the UV water bottle purifiers but as of yet I have not been able to bring myself to spend $100 on one.

Thanks! At first I plasti-dipped my wheels so I could make sure I wanted to keep these wheels rather than swapping them out for TRD wheels. Plasti-dip is very hard to maintain and keep it looking good on an off-road rig though, especially in a tough area like the wheels that see a lot of abuse.

A while back I peeled the dip off the wheels and had them powder-coated black. The PC is much more resistant to damage and MUCH easier to clean. It is hard to get mud off of plasti-dip.

Thanks! I bought my ladder from Amazon and here is a link. It currently shows unavailable though so not sure if that seller is no longer carrying the item or what. Maybe you could find it through another seller. I am very impressed with the durability, cost, and ease of use on this ladder

I do have spare fuses but forgot to list those; I will update the post.

Zip ties! I can't believe I don't have those in my pack as I use them all the time. Will add those immediately.

I had considered one of those self-contained battery boosters but my plan is to run dual batteries relatively soon so I didn't want to spend the money there when I wouldn't really need it with dual batteries.

I do carry a saw in my camping gear but might be wise to have that when wheeling in case I run into obstacles. Either that or just throw my axe into the rig

Thanks! The SouthWest really does have some amazing terrain to explore. Someday I would like to have on-board air with a small tank but the Viair works really well for now. I will likely focus on other projects like dual batteries, fridge, drawer system, skid plates, etc before revisiting my air situations.
