Straight Axel pricing?

Hi I want to do a straight axel swap on my 88 4runner and am wondering if theres any brands to go for or stay away from along with how much I should pay for a kit. Also I go to college and live on campus so I do all my mechanics in the university parking lot. (makes things a lil difficult at times but the girls like it lol) I have access to all the tools I need but have to have everything cleaned at the end of the day with nothing left out. do you think this is a job I could do in a day or should finally cave and take it somewhere to be done.

The sheer optimism in this post is amazing, but the answer is no. You obviously don't have even a basic understanding of what it actually takes to swap a solid axle under your rig. You couldn't do a clean SAS install with a fully equipped garage and all the time in the world. In a day, in a dorm parking lot? Laughable.

Wheel more. Absorb more knowledge. Come back to the idea of an SAS in a couple years.

If the girls love it when you wrench on your car in the parking lot now, they are practically going to rape you when they see you welding in the parking lot!

Iv actually welded a role cage for my friends Baja Bug in the parking lot before. tool and garage are not a problem.

I actually have done 2 SAS before but never purchased on on my own before and stretched the work over a period of time. wasn't sure if i actually sat down for a day if it was probable.

If you've done 2 SAS before then why are u asking us? Everybody knows it can be done before lunch! After lunch you can bob the back end.

haha, because i did small amounts over a period of time, I never just sat down and worked tight to see how long it would take/ I never bought a straight before i was doing it for a friend at the shop i worked at
 
There's always going to be talk about which is a better company to go with regarding parts. I have not ventured into actually performing a SAS, but have done some research. Depending on how crazy you want to go, you could spend $10k in one axle alone. From what I've read and seen online, many people call Trail Gear Fail Gear. I feel if you're wheeling enough, you're going to break something no matter who's parts you have on there. Just make sure to do as much research as you can. I'd preferably go with Dynatrac axles and beefed up innards. Again, having not done one or had one done, I honestly don't think you'd be able to complete it in one day. There's going to be things you run into that you probably weren't planning on. I'd say wait for a better time to do it or a better location. Good luck with it.
 
Im in for the optimism.

Could you finish in a day? No. Could you have it sitting on all 4s at the end of a day? Sure.

Get the majority of the cutting and grinding done, frame jigs drilled and tacked, hanger tacked, springs hung, loosely bolted to an ready to drop in axle, tires and done. Then finish it up the next day(s)

If you can cut/grind/weld in the parking lot, then I say have grab a couple buddys, start early, and have at it.

Make sure to bring extra chairs for the girls. Bleachers would be cool.

And take pictures.

Ok thanks guys for the responses. I think I'm going to have a couple buddies help me do all the grinding wielding etc. and just get it back on its wheels for one night and then finish it up during the weekend when most people are gone. Still looking for a tight axel but hopefully will be getting one soon. found a straight axel for sale on cregslist made by Toyota, so I'm prob going to buy that and then purchase the rest of the kit off of allpro or trail gear
 
AXLE.

Set up a time lapse video too. I would like to see this happen.
