Yo everybody,
So im out at work right now with my 99 SR5 with 293k on the odo. All original parts add 3 inch lift and 33's. While climbing a location road, (100 miles from home), i popped my transfer case i think such that drive free spins in the tranny. I popped it in 4 wheel drive and have power to the front wheels. I plan on a new tranny since ive put a lot into the truck lately. Even have been considering a new Jasper, but the question remains for my current position, do i limp it home? Whaddya think?

Thanks,

I would. Just remember that it's not a FWD truck, it's a 4WD truck with no power to the rear, and it'll act funny on the freeway. Take it slow and drive carefully, and you'll probably make it without dying in a fiery ball of wreckage.

Probably.

I would rather limp home than pay for a 100 mile tow, but that's just me. I have limped home at 10-15mph on snapped leaf springs before :o

wow. strange way for it to break.

yes, assuming you can move it without parts flying/falling off you can drive it pretty much as long as you need to on the front axle.

and really, the only thing you'll notice is some torque steer. if you accelerate gradually, it shouldnt be an issue. you should be able to run normal road speeds aswell.

Da da NAAAAaaa!

Made it with no problems. Drove at about 55 (20mpg)for the entire mileage with no grinding, popping or exploding into flames.

Further investigation yielded a spinning drive shaft while in gear... It sounded like a sheered pin when it went. I, thinking now, not the transfer case, but the spider gear? Thoughts? Will be a much cheaper fix than new tranny.

Cheers!

Glad you're not a fiery ball of truck parts. The rear driveshaft spins free when the truck is in gear? That's going to be expensive. If it just spins free when you're in neutral, then I'd agree that the trouble is in the rear diff, which will only be sort of expensive..
