Hi,
I spent the day in the Anza Borrego desert just checking some dirt roads out near Ocotillo. Took the opportunity to run through all the gearing from 4H to 4L with elocker where needed in 2 short sections. I know when elocker on; ABS off.
At the end of one leg of the trip as I was approaching the pavement I stopped, dropped into neutral, back into 2H and drove in reverse till 4x4 lights stopped blinking on dash as I approached the pavement. As I hit the brakes, I was going ~ 10mph, I got a very strange sensation of pulsing rapidly and grinding harshly and the pedal went lower than usual and I had to apply more pressure than I had been to stop. My passengers dismissed the event as saying I probably got some sand in the caliper and it worked into the pads and was clearing out…. I'm not sure I buy this BUT that's kinda of describes what I felt.
It was as if the sand got between the pads/shoes and rotor/drum and was at once grinding and acting as a "lubricant" preventing a clean stop. ABS went kind of crazy as the vehicles was going slow and slipping….
This all sounds weird to me but I am unsure of what it could be…
Brakes all checked and fine, recently checked/replaced/adjusted as needed.
Worked fine after that and ABS light goes on at start up then off indicating a sound ABS system.
Does any of this make sense?
