Strange sound from passenger front

When backing up with the wheel cut, or driving forward and braking around a turn, I hear this noise coming from the right front. Hard to describe... Not quite a grinding, but it is the best I can use to describe it.

I do have a toy text ultimate 3" lift on the vehicle. Any ideas??

My 03 limited had a noise when I turned hard to right..... Didn't matter whether backing or going forward..... Turned out my right CV was on the way out..... Don't know if that is what you have but might be worth a check....

Are you sure this isn't just your wheel rubbing on the liner? This happens a lot with our runners, due to lift, wheels, tires, etc.

Try turning the wheel all the way and see if the tire is close to the liner. If it is, then with the force of braking your tire is just rubbing.
 
The wheel doesn't need to be fully turned. The tires are stock. I'll check for rubbing in the morning.
The CV joints were replaced shortly after the lift.
Perhaps I should have the service center check them out.

I bought it from this guy, Blue Pit Bearings | 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner Complete Front Hub Wheel Bearing, and did it myself. He presses the bearing and hub assembly together therefore it is just a bolt on project. Otherwise the hub has to be removed, bearing pressed out, new one pressed in, re-install. This way saved me about $50 off the cheapest quote I got. The assembly was $229 shipped. If you are not able to do it yourself, I would imagine if you took this part to a local garage they would charge very little to install it. It's an easy project for someone with the right tools. Before I bought the bearing I had a local shop put the truck up on a rack and listen to the bearings with a stethescope. This verified is was indeed the bearing and not something else.


On another note; I thought it amusing that you have almost the identical stereo system as me. I've got a pioneer 4400, JL 3 channel amp, JL 10w3 in a custom built stealthbox, and JL C5 6.5" components up front.

I'm working through a similar one with my buddy right now. I thought bearing too. But it's looking like a sticky caliper at the moment. We scoped the bearing and didn't hear any noise. Jacked the truck up and turned that wheel and the caliper is definitely grabbing. We're gonna start there.

Well, he replaced both front calipers, brake lines, and a system flush.... And noise turned out to be cupped tires apparently because it's still there.

I've dealt with that tire noise as well and I'd say his is similar. That's where I originally pointed him, but once dealers and shops get involved, they tend to manifest a slew of "problems".

how do you diagnose any of your driveline noises with the sound of the airplane engines (tires) roaring down the road lol.

You get you're handy dandy midget mechanic and strap him to the underside of the 4Runner for a test drive, DUH! :bounce:

Honestly thought, its not easy to diagnose driveline noises at freeway speeds. It drove me nuts when I was trying to diagnose my front diff as it was only occuring at 65~75mh. Most of the time we throw it on a rack and run it, or you learn to try and differentiate the noises on a test drive and get a decent bearing that way.

lol I was joking with superman in his case he's running mud grabs I believe to be the loudest mud tires I've ever heard haha
