strange Tranny Problem

I have a 2000 SR5 auto 4x4 w/ 104k miles which I bought it used around 6 months ago. It was a lease return and in perfect shape. I assume scheduled maintenance was done but records were not included.

On to my problem. On two occasions (weeks apart) after sitting over night I started engine and let warm for a minute. Backed out of parking space and put in drive. It acted like it was stuck in 3rd gear. It would move but barely. I returned tranny to park, than back to drive. Same thing happened. I then shifted to 1st gear and things were normal. Went down street, manually shifted to 2nd and all was well. When I got to the end of my street I stopped, shifted to drive and all was normal. This hasn't happened for a couple of months now. Last I checked 4runners don't fix themselves so I figured I'd better ask some experts. Anyone ever heard of this?

Sounds like your transmission is starting to slip and will probably have to be rebuilt in the near future. My old chevy blazer had these exact same symptoms before I had to have it rebuilt. When it was cold out and the trans fluid was not up to operating temp it would not shift into OD. Then one day it just wouldnt shift out of 2nd or 3rd gear. Hopefully this is not the case but from my experience this could be what is happening to you.

:iagree: had similar problems with our old 1992 Lexus ES300 (Traded in for 350Z). Had to shift the bugger up and down just to get her down to the dealer haha. They actually took it for a 1k despite how beat up that car was. Have it checked ASAP, ya don't want that tranny giving out on you in a bad place.
