So I bought some Bilstein shocks and struts - 5100 series The zinc ones with the adjustable ride height. The place I got them from recommended using the fronts from a Tundra, as the 5100's aren't available for 4Runner, he siad they sell the Tundra struts to 4Runner guys all the time. OK, cool. They seem to know what they're talking about, so I took their recommendation.
So I drop my truck off to get them installed today, and later I get a call saying the struts are like 3" too long and they're never gonna' work. The guy doing the work is my friend & neighbor, and is a Master Tech and Shop Supervisor at a large and established shop, so I have no doubts about what he's telling me. He said the length from the perch to the bottom mount is correct, but throw from the perch up, and the overall length is WAY too long and even if they could get them on it would throw my suspension geometry off and I'd be eating up bushings and tires.
Called the guy where I bought them, he calls me back later and says that he did some more research, and the tundra & stock 4Runner struts should be within 1/2" of each other.
The only thing I can think is that maybe they got mis-labelled , but the p/n is stamped correctly in the shock body and matches the p/n on the box.
Does anybody know where I can find the specs on this?
If I remember correctly, are they longer on the 98'-99's than on my '01? Maybe if he is using the specs from the wrong year runner?
