How about a surplus US military e-tool? They're a lot like the Gerber, and typically come with a rubber belt pouch which keeps them from rattling around (rather than having the pouch be a $15 option). I keep one of those under my driver's seat. Better yet, buy a couple, and if you have anyone riding with you, you can put them to work too!

2 shovels...this is brilliant! Ended up gettin that Gerber etool with the serrated edge from Amazon. Although it may take a month to dig myself outta something similar to my incident, it will at least be quicker than using a road sign.

That's a nice shovel! The Gerber etool and that shovel have identical handles and shafts. I have a feeling the same manufacturer makes both of those shovels. I know Gerber just brands and distributes it.

Ok, I have been holding my thoughts for a week or so.
First, wheeling on your own can leave you stranded and can be dangerous.
Second, IF you venture out on your own, know when to turn around.
IF you insist on continuing when you should have turned around, have EVERYTHING you will need to dig, winch, pull, come-a-long, Mattrack yourself out. Also carry survival gear to last a few days in the vehicle. This should give your friend (that you left info where you went with) time to come rescue you.

Oh yeah, parts fluids and tools too. AND the knowledge to use everything.

don't leave home in the winter without shovel (I carry one of those alum ones that extend) and chains. I have got myself stuck like that before and with a little shovel work and putting the chains on - turned around and back down the road.

Definitely great advice Gerdo but I was not lolligagin around for sh!ts and giggles. I had a destination and left it to my nav to take me on the shortest route. I had no clue I was going to get stuck. I did grab a rescue strap, shackles, shovel, food, extra flashlight, and will grabbing more gear as I follow some of the links provided though. Oh yeah, almost forgot toilet paper!

Easy there tiger...should he bring an inflatable Toyota dealership and a couple service tech's too?? I get where your coming from and it's always good to be prepared but how many spare parts do you bring before it just becomes a better idea to tow an entire spare 4runner behind you.

Good note about the gps and shortest vs quickest routes and other settings. I have sometimes used the feature to select an intermediate destination to avoid taking roads that I know don't work. They can definitly get you in trouble when the gps picks the roads.
