Stuck moonroof cost me $1200.00!

It was stuck open, the cable jammed, they needed to drop the headliner, the a pillar, b pillar, c pillar, knee bolster & put in a new track & cable, lots of fun!

I am always amazed how much some things end up costing, I mean even though the dealership does charge a little more than a normal shop you're still looking at close to a grand for that repair. What's sad is that out of that $1200, minus the part of the cost the technician probably only got 1/5 of the labor cost!

One local shop didn't want to touch it, niether did a sunroof place.

I went in on a Wed. night, picked it up Fri. afternoon.

Ive done several of those replacements and im pretty sure all of them cost even more than 1200. Though i only got probably ~120 of it.

Very common for the 4th Generation & it looks like it carried over to the 5th Generation as well.

K.C. I responded to you on another thread before I read this..I'm about to purchase an 06 with moonroof. Sucks that this appears to be a problem. Would rather have extra headroom but dont think this is a deal breaker. Cant believe no TSB yet if this is a common problem. I told my wife when we get it dont open the roof.

I believe it is related to when you are driving and opening and closing it, little bumps jarr the mechanism and the cable jams. This is what I am guessing. I only close and open when the rig is stopped. Whenever possible.

I'll still use the soon to be my 2006 4r sport's moon roof and be pissed when it breaks and only try to open when it is stopped. Too bad they cant TSB if it is a problem as these rigs arent cheap. I think it is better than the Trailblazer I came dangerously close to buying, working moon roof or not.

From what I've read, apparently the main reason they malfunction is because the white lithium grease from the factory dries up. No lubrication = cable jams, mechanism seizing. I use the sunroof often and haven't had a problem. I do make it a point to re-lube it every year.

So then: USE your sunroof, that's what its there for! Just maintain it. Small price to pay I think. All things being equal, the 4Runner is a SOLID SUV.

The moonroof, sunroof, whatever you want to call it, is a service item. Anyone who has one should be checking it regularly, cleaning out the dust and dirt regularly, and lubing it regularly. BTW this also applies to the spare tire hanger on the 4th gen. That thing should be dropped and lubed etc at least 2x a year.
