So I went wheeling with [MENTION=100172]Jim82[/MENTION] on some mountain trails in WA during the Winter last year. It was my first time driving in the snow with my Nitto exo grapplers, so I was excited to see how they'd handle the snow. So after airing down, we proceeded forward.
Anyways, the further we went, the worse the trail got. We finally got to a point where it looked a little sketchy, but I had a winch, recovery gear and a second vehicle to pull me out if I got stuck, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
First bit gave me a bit of trouble, but I was able to power through it. And then it got shitty....
At this point, I knew I was pretty stuck. Apparently I was on top of a frozen creek, and after going back and forth, I nearly shit myself when the tire slipped off the snow and fell into the rut. [MENTION=100172]Jim82[/MENTION] thought the vehicle was going to tip over, haha. Fortunately it didn't.
At this point, I knew the only way for me to get through it was by using my winch. Also, for me to get out of there, I had to get unstuck, turn around, and then plow back through what I came through.

My dad and I once got stuck really bad in the Panamint valley . We were crossing a wash, I got out and walked it , but when I drove my truck across it , we sunk quickly in the mud...
stuck good...
With no natural anchors to winch off (and we were solo) , I built a bollard, or a channel in the soil, commonly used in mountaineering, to winch off...
It worked thank gawd, there was just enough vegetation to make the soil stable , and allow me to pull myself out ...
I agree - awesome recovery and tutorial on a proper bollard. As a climber, I recognized immediatly the set up and appreciated your use of the vegetations root ball as reinforcement. Excellent Excellent Excellent!

I've never used them. My guess is that they probably work for stock-ish vehicles. My offroad FJ40 has tires with larger footprints than a maxtrax, so they really have no use for more dedicated offroad vehicles. For a stocker - I could see owning a set. Not sure how much I'd use them though.

I'll admit I wasn't "stuck" here, but I did lose forward momentum while running open diffs. I was slowly traversing this washed out, rutted out intersection and ended up in a low traction situation. I could have easily backed up and used more momentum, but I wanted to show off the ATRAC to my brother and my friend. Pressed the button, added some throttle and it crawled right out. I also could have engaged the factory rear locker.
Again, wasn't stuck, but was a good opportunity to flex some of the tools the truck has.

Here's an oldie from 2011. The Tacoma is mine...

This one happened a while back in what looked to be some dirt hills, but turned out to be a 4-6" crust over taffy like mud & clay.
Long story, so here's the teaser:
Here's the timeline:
1. Black 4Runner was playing around in a remote area around 9PM on Friday night and got stuck.
2. Black F250 smoker gets stuck to the frame at 1AM trying to get his brother out
3. Cry for help goes out on TOR and Green 4Runner to the rescue at 9AM, falls in to the frame
4. Black Tacoma (me) gets called in at 11AM, falls in to the axles when trying to pull out black 4R
Now 4 trucks stuck & only a 2wd Pathfinder around
5. Black Tacoma winches self out around 1230 by pulling 2WD Pathfinder into the muck, creating anchor
6. Black Tacoma winches Pathfinder out at 1245
7. Black Tacoma towstraps F-250 over high center & out at 1400
8. Black Tacoma winches then towstraps black 4R out around 1600
9. Tow truck bends J-hook trying to winch on green 4R around 1830
10. F250 and tow truck break suction on green 4R at 1900

Where in TX are y'all?
That area is what Turkey Bend was like before and after the Memorial Day and Halloween floods of this year. The top looked good, but pure hell under the crust.
If my truck had been stuck a month later it'd be under 20 feet of water now.

This was just south of Katy. 1st stuck 4Runner was new to wheeling: no recovery gear, by himself, etc... They spent the night out there because of their mistakes & won't do it again

Have not been stuck in a 4Runner yet unless you count one a Sierra Carnage trip that was destroyed, driven by someone else. But I could tell you stuck stories that would make your blood run cold. When I get stuck, its generally ridiculous. From having to drop the truck off a cliff via winch due to snow and not being able to get straight, hours in snowfields, terrible Big Sluice stuck, crazy Dusy Stuck.......getting stuck is part of the fun.

Something to think about before you get stuck with your ass in the air, someone may come by....:banana:

Good thread and even better with pictures. Just curious but was the condition of the 4 tires you were riding on as good as the 5th on the back of the truck?

The 4 tires were BFG KM2 Mud Terrains, they were about half tread left , the spare is a non-matching IROK bias-ply that I use as a spare...but any tire would have been caked out immediately , the mud was really slick and nasty .
