Sub/Amp Add-on questions

First of... I did the required search and did not see an answer to my question.

Simply put, my son wants to add a JL Audio sub box with a 1200watt amp to the back of a JBL optioned 04 4Runner.

Powering the amp is not an issue, but with a NAV head unit, what wire is the sub trigger wire and is it accessible near the factory amp? If not... what is the trigger wire of choice?

Lastly... (prior experience on Ford sub units) in order to amplify the sub signal, can the harness feeding the factory sub unit be disconnected and wired directly into the amp? Any filters or splitters needed?

What do you mean by trigger wire, the remote wire that tells the amp to "turn on"?

If so, I'm not sure which wire it is specifically in the bundle of wires to the stock amp, but there are other options....

Run a new remote wire from the headunit to the new amp OR tap into the + wire on the 12v plug in the trunk, splice into that wire and run the wire to the new amp. That way, when you turn on the truck, it will also tell the new amp to turn on.

Which JL Audio amp are you using? I have a Kicker KX550.2 that uses the RCA signal to turn on. I feel like this works great because I have it set so that at low volumes there is no sub output, which is really nice for just cruising and have a little background noise without that booming bass you get from a large sub setup.

If I recall correctly, the amp is a single stage 1200watt HighFonics Series matched to the JL Audio sub-box. That is a single 15in woofer. I can only tell you that when it hit... the street would shake!
He had the set-up in his 03, which was totaled by a drunk two days after Christmas. We were lucky, no injuries, just a lost, dam near perfect, 03 Limited.
Very fortunate to have found a one owner, 04 Limited, fully optioned with NAV, REAS, and just about everything thing else Toyota offered, but with only 60K miles.
