you guys failed to tell me these things didnt float! i had my 85 22re in a fairley shallow crossing and made it once going slow. on the way back my buddie (in a tacoma) and i hit it faster. i managed to get some water into my air box so i limped home. i changed the oil's 3 times and got the little bit of water out. i put a new air filter in, pulled the plugs and made sure there was no water in the cylinders, checked cap and rotor. i cleaned the maf and tps and seafoamed the intake. it runs ok, but now i hear a pretty load knock in the engine. it has 240k on the motor with a new timing chain. i plan on doing either a 3.4 or 4.3 swap in the near future so it isnt the biggest deal but i was wondering what you guys thought it was. time for a new motor and a snorkle!:redbrick:

The problem with taking water in the intake is that even if you don't kill it outright up front, the brief-but-enormous strain on the engine internals may cause stress damage that will wait for another time to blow apart on you. Water does not compress like fuel, so on the compression stroke, your pistons and connecting rods take a severe beating when dunked. It's not just about oil contamination, it's about the metal pieces themselves, and the microscopic damage they may undergo. This is why it's no laughing matter crossing water of unknown depth, or heavily-splashing shallower water--you may not pay the piper immediately--he may wait till you're a thousand miles from home a month later!

it turned out there was no water in the cylinders. dose that make a difference? thank god she aint a daily driver. im a huge chevy fan and would love to put the vortec v6 under the hood. like i said im also considering a 3.4 out of a newer yot, but on the same hand ive been told that the new yot 4 cylinder may be just as good of an idea as the v6...?

If it's knocking, there was almost certainly water in the cylinders. It doesn't take much.

You're talking about the 3rz engine? Supposed to be an easier swap into a 22re truck than the 5vze, but it's not as much engine. I'd do either before swapping in a 3.0, though.

3.0 isn't that bad an engine, it's just not worth the swap over a 22re.

thats bad ass...but a little more than i need in this old whore lol. as much as i love chevys im starting to think i may just need to put the 3.4 in. am i right in understanding i can use my old tranny and t case? i know i know....theres plenty of info on the web......:whipping2

ive looked and looked and cant find a build thread on my specific situation. can some one please point me in the right direction? i need info on doing a 3.4 toyota v6 swap into a bone stock 85 4runner. im sick of finding treads close to but not the same as mine. thanks.

Yotatech is great for these types of things. I havent had a chance to actually look through most of those threads but you should be able to find what you need in there.

What he said - Yotatech has a whole section dedicated to engine swaps, did you look there? The 3.4 into a 22re has to have been done at least 50 times...

Should be, yeah, 22re is a 22re. If there are any differences, they'll be insanely minor.

Nag, nag! LOL! Okay, so I kept it "wimpy" stock--I thought it would be nice if the rest of my drivetrain survived the transplant, what with 300 ft-lbs without any modifications (compared to the 3.0's "monstrous" 125!).

well i limped down to my local shop and he told me i have a bent rod. good thing she aint a daily driver. man i dont know what i want to do. this is a soon to be crawler/hunting rig. do i get a remaned 22re and do the duel t case, or go through the hair pulling out 3.4 or 4.3 swap. i cant make up my mind......

Rebuilding the 22RE is probably your cheapest route, but certainly not the route if you want much more power. It sounds like a lot of people have had success swapping in the 3.4, and with that engine, you wouldn't have to worry about mangling the rest of the drivetrain with excessive torque. I think I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but "toyotacarpart" can provide a good reman'd engine. Best of luck!
