Its the fuel. The ethanol has less power in it so when you replace gasoline with ethanol, you get less work out of it and therefore worse MPG.
Also, it is counterintuitive but higher octane gets worse mileage. If you can run 87 without pinging, run it.
I actually have consistently noticed increase in mileage with all my v6 vehicles?
