sudden loss of mileage

Hi,

I am new to 4runners in general. I saw several post about taking the slack out of the throttle cables to improve drive-ability. I has slack in mine, so i tightened them. I made sure not to move the throttle mech, but i seem to have all the sudden decreased my mileage. any ideas?

I don't see how the throttle cable would affect your mpgs as long as the butterfly still closes all the way at idle. Have you been using the A/C a lot lately? That'll kill mpgs.

Thinking out loud....
Why did you need to improve your driveability? Hesitation on take-off? Something else? Or was it fine and you just took up slack?
If hesitation- and to start.....how clean is your maf?

Cheap and easy, pull it and look at the fine gauge very delicate wire inside. I have to use my readers and a flashlight. If it's dirty use a maf cleaner and clean it. On my 96 I have to unbolt the whole thing to get to it, on the 99 there are a couple of bolts that allow you to pull out just the maf.....thing directly behind the air cleaner (never assume who knows what).

If it's nice and shiny you aren't out anything but a little time (unless you break the wire) and can go from there.

MAF is located just after the Air Filter. You can pull the MAF by removing a couple of the screws and disconnecting the cable... User MAF Cleaner Only.
