Suddenly running 10-15 degrees hotter than normal -- cause?

My Scangauge has consistently read 195*-207*. This is normal. I get these readings driving the highway or idling/slow wheeling for hours. The outside temp doesn't make much of a difference. This is if it's 50* or 105* out.

So...

The fan roars at cold start and then quiets down after a minute or so

Then at operating temperature ( idling 10 minutes and scangauge showing 190*) the fan can be easily stopped with rolled up newspaper test.

This indicates the clutch is not working as it should...... correct?

I'll do again in and hour or so after I drive it to run up the expressway to do some things today.

Maybe not. I could probably stop my brand new one under the same conditions, at least some of the time. But it no longer boils over in traffic on 103° days, like the old one did. If temp is only 190°, why do you need the FC to engage? Did you see it cycle into airplane mode at all during the 10 minutes? What was ambient temp? Was A/C on?

The start-up behavior says it's healthy. These things are binary--it's either on or off. When mine was dead, I never knew it until I hit the Lincoln Tunnel traffic jam on a 103° day with A/C on MAX. It really doesn't engage that often in normal driving.

So I did not Check the fan again after a long drive drive since it was raining

When I was about 2 miles from my exit, the temp. was 202*. I took the transmission out of over drive, so that the Rpms would go up for those two miles. The temp. Dropped to 197*. 2 miles later after a few stop and goes at Red lights, the temp was back at 202*. When I pulled into the parking spot still 202*. Turned the heat on high and the temp. went and held at 190*.

The A/C on or off makes no difference and I suppose it was 75 - 80*

I'll be putting a fan clutch on it when I find time.

Sounds totally normal.

Well, it's easy and it's at end-of-life anyway, so go ahead. It might not change anything but you'll have a new fan clutch and I can tell you it's a real pain when they fail on the road. I got my OEM Aisin fan clutch at partsgeek.com for a pretty good price.

I agree it is within a normal temperature range.

I guess it just bothers me, because it changed suddenly under cooler conditions than when I was last driving it.

This makes me think that there is something ( a component ) at least under performing, and I wonder what temps I'd be seeing if it was 90 to 100* like it was in August.

It's an easy replacement and not too expensive.
