Suggestions for Painting new Plate Bumper?

My new bare metal AOR front plate bumper will be arriving Wednesday and I really want to have it ready to go back up the mountain by Friday afternoon. My plans for primer & paint include the following:

* Quick surface prep with oscillating tool (Brillo type pad) & rubbing alcohol wipe down.
* 2 coats Rustolleum Self Etching primer
* 3-4? coats Rustolleum Professional semi gloss enamel

So the question is, does this sound about right or missing anything? Enough coats?

This will be the first bare metal part of this type I have ever done so I'm certainly open to suggestions if my plan needs adjusting. Would a final clear coat be necessary or recommended or will primer/paint be just fine? Any tips welcome....

Note: I have already considered the bedliner and PlastiDip options, but believe good old rattlecan paint will work the best for my needs.

I had mine powder coated so I can't really say much about painting it other than it would be a real pain to get consistent coverage in all the weird angles and in places like behind the bottom front where the holes are. I don't even know how the powdercoaters did mine so well

Is it salty where you live? If the man uses liquid vehicle destroyer there, I wouldn't suggest the Rustoleum products on your new steel investment. If no salt, it would be perfect and easy to touch up. Otherwise, I'd say POR-15 treatment with top coat of whatever, powder coating, or Rhino lining/Line-X.

Sounds close to what I'm doing.

Wipe down with acetone.
Few coats of self etching primer.
Several coats of black hammered Rustoleum.

Slap the bad boy on and go hit the trails this weekend. :thumb:

I have used all types of paints and they always chip. Steve suggested I use Krylon Dual Satin Black when I picked up my AOR bumper. Its primer and paint in one. Its what is on all the bumpers in most pictures on his website. I was hesitant at first but its been months now and its holding up very well. I did a good 5 coats of the paint with no base primer. Better than any other paint I have used and thats using etching primer, primer and paint. I also through it on the grill thats always chipping and its pretty much still perfect. I recommend it.
