Suggestions on enhancing 4runner performance

I bought a 1996 toyota 4runner sr5 a few months back and I was wondering what I could do or buy to make the best of my horsepower or enhancing the trucks performance in general without breaking the bank. Any suggestions??

It's not a 4wd but I'm planning on getting a lift kit for it. Any suggestions on what kits would be good? Any suggestions welcome I really appreciate it

Welcome, there really is not much for enhancing the performance on these trucks, but if you make sure all the maintinance items are up to date it will serve you well. Plugs,wires,timing belt,water pump,radiator. You could go super charger or turbo to get extra perf. But thats $$$$$$.

I got all that covered I even cleaned the whole engine and what not. But as far as cold air intakes and stuff like that. Don't know much about them, but I've heard it helps boost a cars performance? Would that be recommended for my truck?

It has been shown that they do not do much for these vehicles other than sound. Any questions you have has probably been asked, if you type in your question at the top of the page in the google search bar it will pull up tons of info. for you to read.

I have had a good result with doing the k&n intake and a exhaust on my 2nd gen. So that being said I would disagree with [MENTION=106270]RedSled[/MENTION]. Now this may be different on a 3rd gen vs my 2nd. I will say when it was just the intake my gain was mostly just sound and a little spunk. Once i did the exhaust also the combo gave me sound (duh) a hp gain and mpg gain. Maybe the combo is the key. Just my experience. My exhaust is a 2.5" pipe w/ no cat and a magnaflow muffler.

my t4r that i picked up w/ 180k miles

I felt to most power gain was when I put in a new oem fuel filter. I think the old fuel filter was there for 15+ years from the factory so it was gross.

Then I did the deck plate and new air filter to help little more.
