Sulfur (aka. Rotten Egg) Smell on '03 4Runners

Replaced Filter

My 2001 4runner began to have this smell after an oil change at the local 'car care place' -- they also replaced the air filter. I put up with this smell for about a month before I read the comments on this site and decided to go out and purchase/replace my air filter (making it an air flow problem). It appears to help...not sure if it is completely solved, but it smells a lot better.

Seafoam clean-out

Has anyone run Seafoam through their engine to clean out the cats with success?

anyone else in a 15, 16 smelling rotten eggs yet....I know I am...going to seafoam it this weekend and see what that does...

I love my 4runner...but hate the smell worse than love my truck....praying seafoam is the magic fix.

My 16 Limited is starting to have that smell also. I have about 3000 km on it. It was bought in June. Where I live they have switch to winter gas. I did not have an issue this summer. Not sure if it is normal. Might be something to do with the winter gas.

Over the next few years, the "reformulated areas" will expand. However, this is very costly to the oil companies...thus, it is not an overnight change.


Just a note: I have not heard of one case of sulfur smell from California 4runner owners.

My 2009 4 runner has the same issue. Only happens once in awhile, sometimes more than others, but it's a strong smell when it happens.

Well, here I am. 2023 4 runner trd off road premium. I now have 2500+ miles on it and still today while acceleration it smelled so bad I was gagging. To me it smells like hot cat pee.

I bought it in California and have been putting California gas in it. Still smells terrible. I had a 2018 Tacoma before this...almost 200k miles and never had this smell.

No way I am putting up with this, its going back to the dealer this week. They need to figure it out. I paid way too much for my truck to smell like this.
