Sulfur and then some...

Wife and I noticed a new smell the other day. The smell itself wasn't that strong, but was pungent. Would burn at the back of your throat after a few seconds like being around something that's been cleaned with strong chlorine bleach. Only got it under hard acceleration, accompanied by the sulfur that we've been living with. Anybody else getting this?

We use Chevron or Shell gasoline without exception and have not had a problem with the sulpherous smell. In fact, after reading many posts on this I stood behind the vehicle while my wife reved the engine to 4500 or so. The smell was evident, but not obnoxious by any means. Inside the cab, we rarely smell it. I'm convinced it's the gasoline.

Just about everyone else

I think it is rarer to NOT have the sulfer smell than have it. It has been present since new, and does not go away. Until the fuel manufacturers eliminate sulfer from the gas, the hyper efficient Toyota catalytic systems will emit that smell.

I'm really not trying to fan the "Can't believe my 4runner stinks like sulfur" flame, so to speak. I'm fortunate in that I only notice the smell if the rear window is down and I push the truck fairly hard. I was just wondering if anybody else has experienced this other smell that coincidentally occurs under the same conditions that produce the sulfur.

if this because of the low emissions vehicle status? i think it's gonna be pretty tough, driving with the windows and roof shut all summer.

houston gets pretty hot esp during july and august, but i would like to drive with fresh air at least to work in the morning...

Rear Window down, yes

Yes, only when the rear window is down. Or if there is a breeze from behind and stop quickly after accelerating, the smell catches up. I never smell it with only the front windows and sunroof open.

got the smell here but only with the rear window down and pushing the truck but I don't keep the window down, I noticed the smell on other cars way before I ever got the 4Runner
