Camping
Green Ridge State Forest, Group Site 1 - Wallizer Road (39.652597, -78.478800), Flintstone Maryland. GS1 is just past the fishing pond which will be on your right if you’re coming in from the east.
Food
Meals are on your own as a family. Bring adequate water for your family as well, there is no potable water in the Park. Saturday lunch will be a picnic lunch during the drive so bring what you need for a mid-day stop away from camp. We will be stopping Saturday afternoon in Paw Paw for ice cream at Ellies Ice Cream, 251 W Miller Highway, Paw Paw, WV. Bring cash? Not sure if they accept credit card.
Fire Wood
We’re asking families to chip in a bundle of wood for the center fire pit if you’re staying the night. There’s no place to buy wood in the park. We usually buy a bundle at the store and supplement with deadfall.
Activities
Our kids have a whole box of toys that accompanies us on trips. There will be plenty for the kids to play with when we’re in camp. We will also be stopping at a swimming hole. Bring a bathing suit and towel. We strongly recommend wearing water shoes of some sort. It’s rocky and there’s always the chance of broken glass or fish hooks. We plan to do a short easy hike to the Paw Paw tunnel. We recommend walking shoes, not flip flops.
Facilities
We rented a porta john for the group site, as required by the Park. It will be stocked with TP and hand sanitizer. Not a bad idea to keep an emergency roll of TP with you. There are no shower facilities.
Schedule
Friday 7/28 - arrive at GS1 after 3pm. [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION] and [MENTION=162270]MrsOutbound[/MENTION] will probably be up there around 6:30-7ish. Campfire and fun till bedtime!
Saturday 7/29 - if you’re joining us on Saturday, arrive by 10am.
Begin group drive at 10am leaving from GS1. [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION] has planned about 2 hours of driving to include some scenic views, water crossings and low-level technical stretches. Based on our scouting this weekend, the water levels are pretty low.
Break for lunch at the water hole about noon. Swimming and lunch for about an hour or so.
Depart water hole around 1pm and drive for approximately 10 minutes to hiking trail.
Stop at hiking trail and take short easy hike to Paw Paw tunnel. It’s a historic tunnel. Pretty cool. Kids will like it.
After returning to vehicles, drive to Ellie’s Ice Cream for afternoon treat.
When we’re done at ice cream, we’ll return to GS1 for dinner on your own and group camp fire.
Sunday 7/30 - Breakfast and break camp. You’re welcome to hang around and drive more. We need to be off the site by 11am.

Communications
There’s basically no cell phone service but you can try to reach me at 413-896-7123 via text if you need to. Texts seem to work better than cell reception. We’ll have CB and ham radios in some vehicles during the drive. Channels will be distributed at the site.
Fee
We’re asking everyone to split the cost of the site rental and ports John. We’re expecting the total cost per family to be about $20.

Hmmm, break out the wet weather camping gear folks and prepare for muddy trails!
We'll be there rain or shine! [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION] and I have a few extra tarps and we'll bring our 13x13' canopy. We have an ARB awning on the truck and for those of you that have traveled with us before, we have a SylvanSport GO trailer to sleep off the ground in. It also has a canopy. Please shout out if you need some help with wet weather gear.
Look at it this way - more fun in the mud!!

Now that's a storm. Just sent you a GWNF/Todd Lake region alternative [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION]. 1" of rain on Friday will make for a fun Saturday without dealing with the total monsoon further north.

thank you for your diligence in planning this trip. My family and I are going to have to cancel. Unfortunately, I was informed yesterday that I have to go overseas for work for a week or so; leaving tonight. Have to spread freedom and democracy and all that... However, I do have my leave approved for the MAOF the 10th thru 13th of August and I look forward to seeing you all there. Hopefully we can all get a group camp area set up. [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION], [MENTION=141503]carlos.elmotor[/MENTION], let me know if you all have plans to convoy up together. Another person reached out on the MAOF thread and we're looking at linking up somewhere between DC and Baltimore. If we get more folks to link up, we can adjust once we determine the route up there.

I'll be watching the forecasts very closely. If the warnings remain constant I will likely change plans to either a Saturday morning arrival or worse case a cancellation.
I don't mind rain, but flooding conditions are not fun and I'm reluctant to put my family at risk just for recreation. Also, this will be my wife and kids first time camping, so I really want them to love it, haha

We're watching the weather and will likely make an announcement later for a possible change or venue which will have less precipitation. Some rain can't be avoided. Keep on eye on the thread today.

Update: Location / Itinerary
Due to the expected heavy rains in Green Ridge area we have decided to adjust our location South to the George Washington National Forest outside of Harrisonburg VA. This area's forecast shows significantly less rain.
Friday Evening:
We will camp individually at Todd Lake Campground ($16per site) in George Washington National Forest. The campground is first come - first serve but I expect it to be empty considering the weather. (38.366, -79.211).
Saturday:
Rally at Todd Lake Campground at 10am (38.366, -79.211). We will then proceed to the top of Reddish Knob to take in the likely rainy view, when appropriate we will break for lunch under our vehicle awnings. After lunch we will proceed to towards Brandywine WV where we will stop for ice-cream, drinks, and snacks at the local convenience store. From Brandywine we will proceed to Flagpole Knob via the easy route- Dunkel Hollow RD. After flagpole we will head back to Todd Lake.
Those who wish to stay the evening can camp at the Todd Lake campground or if there is enough of us we can find a group site close by in the NF.
