Sunk the runner this weekend..

Well, it only takes a split second for something to go wrong and to realize you've made a bad decision. In my case, I wasn't using my head and I made a bad judgement call. The good thing however, is that we learn from these mistakes and gain more knowledge of these situations . Luckily, no one was hurt and the runner, after some TLC, is going to make it just fine. On to the story!

A few of us got together for a day trip through a national forest here in Arkansas. We were about 9 miles from the end of the trip and crossing one of the last creek beds. Off to the right was a deeper part of the creek but I made a bad decision of not checking it myself. After edging into the water, my passenger side was angled down further into the water than the driver side. The loose rocks below however kept causing me to slide further down. Being how loose it was and the angle I was at it was too late to back up. I was not able to move fast enough so water eventually rushed into the exhaust, clogging the muffler, and killing the air flow, causing the truck to die. After the excruciating fearfulness of seeing my rig take water, the guys hurriedly began the recovery process and pulled me out. Luckily my deckplate was in and what little water that did come into the intake got trapped in the intake silencer. After sitting (and draining) for about 45 min. we tried starting it up. Coincidentally, the starter was done for. It has been on the fritz for a while and happened to die completely. So I was towed back to pavement (about 9 miles) to begin the starter removal process while a couple others went all the way back to my house to get my other starter. BTW, 2" body lift makes for a lot easier removal/installation. After replacing the starter we tried cranking it over and it wouldn't start. Then about an hour and half later of diagnosing and making calls we found that the muffler was still so full of water it wouldn't allow air through. We removed the exhaust, leaving the cat, gave it a couple cranks and finally started. Now it sounds like a shitty v8 lol.

I'm currently in the drying stages after spending all Sunday morning and early afternoon cleaning and wet vacuuming the carpets. I hope to get most of the the interior back together this evening. Then tomorrow get some exhaust work done, oil change, drain diffs, seafoam, and whatever else. By the end of the week, I hope she's back to normal. Now, what you've all been waiting for....

Time for new tails lights..

Damn dude that's rough...Were you the one who waded into the water to hook up the tow strap? Or do you just have some great friends?

Dang thats crazy, that is a very misconceiving creek, being that narrow i wouldnt expect such a deep hole off to one side like that either. Glad to hear nothing too expensive or permanent happened. Learning from our mistakes can really suck sometimes!

I just want to know if the cell phone on that guy's belt survived.

Sorry about the truck. From the first pictures it looked like it didn't get very deep, but then I scrolled down. I don't think a snorkle would have helped here since it probably died from water in the exhaust (from the angle).

It wasn't me.. Just a very helpful friend! He literally jumped in there instantly. It was a knife holster, not his phone. Snorkel would have definitely kept water out the intake but not much got in to begin with. It was all in the exhaust. I'll be going and getting a 24" magnaflow and some exhaust work done tomorrow hopefully.

Well good thing it isn't a mall crawler, or else you'd be selling it right now!

Good thing you still had the intake silencer in, I'd be pretty bummed to see you blow up your motor.

Good thing you hadn't replaced the TB/H20 pump before now. I hope it all works out.

My friend lost a Ford truck like that in quicksand; with the bed still visible it was towed out, washed off, and after a couple of cranks, fired up and was driven away. The starter never turned over again after that though.

x2, I think most of us would have underestimated the depth of that crossing too lol Sorry to hear man! Luckily your truck will be fine.

24" Magnaflow seems like it would be too quiet for how mean your truck looks.... I'm running a 14"... *cough cough* consider it *cough cough* :D

The most frightening thing about the ordeal other than the water coming in was the thought of me flopping over in it. I've been through some pretty hairy situations without batting an eye, but this one I actually got a scared. I was at such an angle that if the rocks gave way under me I was screwed.

Stockwell45 I've always debated taking it out for a straight piece of pipe. I never though of the drawbacks to it not being there, only the fact that it gives more air flow. I'm actually thankful I had it.

LittleCaesar haha, I know.. I would have been a little upset about that. However, it's time to do it very soon.

downpour11 I've had the 18" for a few years and the sound was getting to be too loud for me. It had been getting louder the older it got. I'm sure the 24" will break in and get a little louder in time, but for now I just want something a little more quiet. Sometimes I feel like loud exhaust thing is for the younger crowd. I'll be 27 this year, so I'm over it. Now if I had a muscle car that would be totally different, but I wouldn't be driving it every day either.

Ah we're the same age lol but yeah I see what you mean. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think my exhaust is loud at all. My ears are pretty shot though haha anyway, glad you're getting it fixed up!

HA! I'm very deaf, and I think NO muffler is loud - currently running sans muffler. Can't wait to get my stock-sounding muffler on and enjoy things more quiet! :D

Got the interior back in this evening. Everything seemed pretty dry, couple lightly damn spots but should dry out in this summer heat no problem. To anyone else that does the same thing, I highly suggest using a wet vac! It saved me hours! I'm glad this wasn't mud. Lucky it was fresh scent free water haha.

OUCH. Been there, done that. My previous 04 did the same, hole DEEPPER than it looked/expected. Mine was a mud hole though, made the starter, tensioners, brake pads go out prematurely. Water came in so far, the electrical system was going hay wire.
I was lucky to not have the exhaust side go under, stayed running.

Yes, shop wet vac was my friend on this one, along with the air compressor.

This one never made it to carfax though.

Hope to see her going again, yours that is.
