sunroof and wheel bearings

I have a 2005 4Runner SR5 with 160K miles on it. I have been following maintenance perfectly during the course of its life (oil changes every 3K miles and everything listed in the factory maintenance manual) and I have not had a single problem with the 4Runner. It is by far the best truck/car I have ever owned and I depend on it to get me through very rough northeast winters. A couple of months ago, my sunroof got stuck open and the dealer told me I needed a new one for $2000. Instead, I purchased a used sunroof from a wreck for $500, but after it was installed, there is a very annoying rattle in the roof when the sunroof is closed. I brought it back to the auto body place and they told me that it is the sunroof and since the used sunroof was bought "as is" from the junkyard, I am kind of stuck with it. Additionally, my left front wheel bearings are gone and need to be replaced ($200+). So, I definitely need to get the bearings replaced, but wondering if I should go back to the Toyota dealer and get a new sunroof for $2000 or live with the rattle. If the 4Runner will go another 5-10 years, I will go for the sunroof, but if the consensus is that I will start seeing more and more go wrong, I may want to trade it in for a 5th generation 4Runner. Any thoughts?

A lot of people have talked about sunroof problems on here. Most of them say just get your sunroof closed and dont use it anymore. If you can find the rattle and stop it with something I would just do that and not use it. Maybe even ask your body shop if they can just isolate the rattle and stop it with either wedging something in there or even rtv that sob. I just had to have my front left wheel bearing done and it was over 500 dollars all said and done. Luckily I have an aftermarke warranty and it covered most all of it. My 04 has 140k miles on it and I plan on running it to atleast 300K. I assume it is a v6? Then again it depends on your situation. I still love the looks of the 4th generation especially lifted and outfitted. I'm not a fan of the looks of the 5th gen unless lifted with bigger tires..then they look pretty sick!

When I bought my 4runner from auction the sunroof was stuck open. Hence why I got it so cheap. I just held the close button for a few seconds and it made some deathly sounds, then slid closed. I have since forgotten that I have one. Wish there was a way to know what caused them to get stuck open.

If you can get the done for $200 each please tell me where ! I need 'em too.

The OEM bearing is listed in the book for $175, which is probably what a dealer would charge.

Rockauto sells Timken front bearings for under $70. I've used them several times and they are fine.

Replacing the bearing is easy and takes a couple of hours.

Is that just the bearing assembly or the whole hub & bearing?

$70 for bearing only. Plus another $10 for the seals. You will need a press for 4wd also. You just don't have to press them out of the knuckle.

I don't know the exact book time, but I would guess no more than 2hrs per side and that is a generous guess. So at most it should be no more than $250-300 per side.

Did them on separate days, but looks like the invoice for each was $178 for bearing, $39 for seals, 2hrs labor, tax and misc shop display fee of $3.

Maybe I could have shopped around more, but the shop that did the work has a good reputation and used oem parts.

That sounds right. You could have saved a little labor by having them done at the sametime. The dealer parts is what drove up the cost. In this case after market bearings are probably a better choice since the OE ones go fairly early, but you should be good for another 100K.

Just want to add some info.

Commonly available parts store bearing by Moog part # 515040 are re-boxed made in Japan NSK bearings.

You can check the packaging as it should say made in Japan and also list asian spec. The bearing itself should also be stamped NSK made in Japan as well.

A good aftermarket replacement for the expensive dealer item.
