sunroof issues. wont close.

hey folks. I have a 19 TRD ORP with 50k on it. I bought it new from the dealer in sept 19. My sunroof is having some issues. It started about a year ago, but at first it happened rarely and briefly. Also, it originally only happened when it was hot. Now it's constant and not temperature dependent. like every time I open the sunroof.

So here's what happens: I open the roof, it opens like normal. Then later, when I close it, it will close normally until the point at which it would fold down the front pop-up wind guard thing, then it reverses back to fully open. At first, if I grabbed the front lip of the sunroof and helped push it past that point, it would close, but now it won't even do that. It doesn't help if I hold the wind guard down. The wind guard thing also has no problems moving. I've looked, and there's no obstructions. I did offroad a lot with it open, so it's possible that the rails are packed with dirt or something.

when it first started, i took it to a dealer. They said it just needed the limits reset, by closing it and holding the button forward for like 30 seconds. I did that, and it's not helping anymore. the only way I can get it closed now is to attempt to close it about 5 times in a row, after which the automatic close stops, and you can inch it forward with the switch, and for some reason it doesn't return, and will actually close all the way.

I'm out of warranty, so I'd like to figure this out without taking it back to the dealer if possible.

It's a maintenance issue. Had the same happen to me. Clean the grease out of the tracks and use a dry silicone or graphite lubricant, something that will not collect dirt as much. I used a silicone spray as i had it on the shelf. The grease has collected enough junk to create just enough resistance that the sunroof thinks its obstructed. At least that was my issue.Don't forget to treat the rubber seal while there.

My issue was similar, just needed to do the factory learning/reset procedure consisting of holding one of the buttons down for like 10 seconds. Forget right now what it was exactly but I was fixed in 30 seconds. Search it.

I've been having this problem for a few years now too, it seems to only happen during warm weather. I've had to keep tapping the close button once it gets close to the air deflector to get it to inch closed. I'll try cleaning the tracks, applying graphite, and holding the close button for 30 seconds.

I bet it's your motor going bad. intermittent operation of windows is usually a motor and regulator issue. try replacing the motor and regulator for the sunroof (ya I know its a PITA and $$$$$). my rear glass was slow in the winter and not really that fast in the summer. and eventually this winter it started getting stuck. I had the opposite temperature problem that you had but with a new motor and regulator everything went back to normal. I didn't realize how fast that rear glass really moves until I replaced both motor and regulator
