Sunroof Issues

To anyone else experiencing this problem...
Make sure to get it resloved before your warranty expires.

Mine has been making a ratcheting noise when it reaches its open or closed limits.
It is still under warranty, barely.
Found out that in order to repair they will need to first get the parts necessary, they are on back-order.
My car will then go to another shop because the headliner needs to come down.
Approx cost $1200-$1500 which is paid under warranty, thanks Toyota.
I've had no other issues w/ my 4Runner.

I don't recall reading any posts about a racheting noise -- most describe a cracking noise. You can search for sunroof issues and see the many posts where the problems have been discussed.

I recently started having problems with my sunroof, the auto mode is shot and I have to either hold the buttom down to open/close or tap at it.

It becomes a pain tryingt to completely shut the sunroof since I have to keep tapping at it until it closes completely. If I keep holding the button down, it will go right into tilt or continue opening.

This is he first thing that has gone a little weird on my 4R.. I'll bring in into the dealer in a few weeks when it is time for an oil change.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes, about 2 minutes should be enough. Then reconnect the negative cable.

To reinitialize (auto function on) the windows and moonroof, hold the down the window switch for a few seconds after its fully opened. Then roll up the window and hold it up for a few more seconds. The 'Auto' light on the window switch should go from blinking to solid on the driver side. Test the one-touch auto open/close function afterwards. Do the same for the back window, open then close.

For the moonroof, I did the tilt first. Tilt the glass open and hold it down for a few seconds. The glass will go all the way up and then down slightly. Then I closed the roof and slide it open while holding on the slide open side for a few seconds after it was fully opened. Test the one-touch open/close function for both tilt and slide.

For those of you out of warranty; try lubing your sunroof rail, popup visor parts and spring using a wee bit of lithium grease on a Q-tip. Open and close your moonroof and lube it again. Use the Q-tips to make sure the grease goes where it is suppose to go. You can cover the inner seats and center console with a large yard trash bag just to be safe. I'd lube the moonroof at least every six months.

I open my roof often here in so. California and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems yet.

No problem. I forgot to mention and hope I'm not too late. You'll lose your radio presets, clock, mileage computer and tripometer info, odometer info isn't lost. You may want to write those down.

So this conversation has piqued my curiosity, and maybe someone can chime in here. I have the 2005 and one of the things that seems unfathomable to me is that, with mine, you never actually know if the roof is open or tilted. There is no lighted warning, of course. And no way to actually tell when using the switch. That is, when you press the "one-touch" switch it moves from tilting to opening instantly with no stop whatsoever at closed in between. So I always have to guess at about where it is exactly between them and time my finger coming off the switch at that millisecond. If I am a millisecond off, then it has already moved past shut to starting to open or tilt. Is this how this is supposed to work? Or is this "reinitializing" a solution? We've actually stopped using the roof because of this problem of never knowing if it is actually shut or not. Thanks a bunch!

Sounds like you have a problem with the one-touch computer for the moonroof. On both my 4R and Camry, exact same one switch setup for tilt and slide, the roof stops at the close position. If going from tilt open to slide open or slide open to tilt open, it stops at the closed position--it takes two button presses to go from one of open positions to the other.

Have you tried reinitializing the moonroof one-touch?

If going from tilt open to slide open or slide open to tilt open, it stops at the closed position--it takes two button presses to go from one of open positions to the other.

Have you tried reinitializing the moonroof one-touch?

Once reinitialized, the roof should stop automatically when it is closed, regardless of whether coming from open or tilt.
