Sunroof rattle is killing me

wow- just came across this thread- yet another person who has been aggravated by the rattle except mine is on the passenger side rear corner (2003 sport)..i can reach in there with my fingers and stop the rattle so im crossing my fingers that the lithium grease solution does the trick

Yep, couldnt really think of any other options to stop it. It needs a lot of upwards pressure to stop the movement. For now it seems like the best solution, and is easy enough to pull the spacers if I want to open it.

There also is an actual Toyota Sunroof Repair Kit you can purchase from the dealership and step by step how to.
It was created after the recall had expired so you can DIY it the way the dealerships had fixed/band aid the sunroof rattle issue during the recall which was for 36months or 30,000 miles which ever came first.
Or pay the dealership to do it for you.

Or do the nylon washers on the rails method like myself and others have done.
Many options and ideas (multiple versions) since some don't work for others cause not all the rattles are exactly the same. All can be found here on this site to find the one that works best for you.

Or say screw it and crank the tunes!!! :rockon::rockon:

Mine was actually replaced new not too long ago. They have no idea what's wrong with it and I'm tired of leaving the runner there with no loaner.:car:
 
old bump... mine isn't rattling, its whistling.. I usually just pop it up never really open it..

if its closed it whistles.. if its cracked or open it doesn't..

any ideas?
 
This used to drive me crazy. I ****ed around with it a while. Never found a long term solution. You know what finally fixed it? New shocks and struts. At 125000 miles. Silent as a mouse now. STG. YMMV.

Update: at 140000 miles, the rattle is back.

Tilt it up, shove a little foam or part of a rag up there, and close the sunroof so it punches whatever you put up there. If you don’t use the sunroof this is an easy instant fix.
 
Here’s my issue, the tilt function worked to close the sunroof but the back is not flush and will allow water inside when it rains. I’ll review the threads but if anyone knows the solution, please save me some time.

Do you have a part number for this kit?
 
For the last couple months of owning my rig, this rattle has driven me to the point of going out and buying an entire new sunroof assembly so i could play with it and determine what the rattle was off the truck. (And I robbed the glass off for a different 4runner, so I needed the assembly anyways). Well, I think I found an easy solution.

I started off my greasing the channel documented earlier in this thread (#1), and that didn't help. My rattle was coming from further back. After playing with this assembly, I found that the hinging mechanism had lots of play, where the pin is in the "wavy" channel, as well as the base of the triangular support. So while the sunroof was closed, I removed the two plastic rail covers, took some thick lithium grease, and squeezed it into those two spots, and for the last few days, my rattle has been non-existent. Only time will tell if it is long term, but so far, so good.
