Sunroof won’t open

I’ve searched some of the threads, could not find answer. Sunroof on the 97 SR5 won’t open. I hear the motor when I try to open, and also on tilt mode. Seems like it wants to open, but it won’t. Can it be opened manually? Would some wd-40 work?

It's a cable actuated system and the cables ride in tubes that have a tendency to corrode and freeze up. I think occasionally people are able to free them up but typically you have to replace the whole assembly. Mine is rusted solid.

Had the same issue on my 96 but it would just slight open on tilt and none on going back. I had my girlfriend push the motor button while I had a hand on top and a hand on bottom pulling it back. No it goes back and forth if pretty slow.

Is the whole sunroof assembly easy to change?
Yeah pretty easy. Pop back some trim covers, pull the headliner out, unbolt the sunroof. I have a sunroof in a 2000 parts rig at my house in central MA, I'll sell it for $100. I periodically head to southern CT near Bridgeport & Stamford area, could meet you there, just depends on my customer calls in that area. But I'm sure there's a lot of parts rigs in your area also, lot are salt neglected in the northeast.
In my 4runner, I don't use my sunroof, in fact I keep the shade closed too. I'm a vampire btw. You could always just disable the sunroof and not open it. What really sucks if you open it and can't close it. I bought my current 4runner with a jammed open sunroof, I had another parts rig at home and swapped it out. So you could just unplug it and call it a day.
