Super winch 8500 adequate for a 5th gen 4runner?

Hey fellas. A friend is offering me a great deal on a 8500lb winch. I thought our trucks required closer to 10k lbs. but I am tempted. Opinions?

Rule of thumb is 1.5 * GVW, minimum. Of course, a winch is not complete without snatch blocks and other gear to mitigate heavy pulls on a short line.

With enough sheaves and rope you can get by with a 1000# winch

A comealong is a good piece of gear to carry, also.

The main downside is they are SLOW! But they work quite well....

They can be handy even when using an electric winch, or other vehicles for recovery. Particularly on side slopes, to keep the vehicle off of rocks/trees/or a cliff.

Understood.

I've used them as a main winch in mild muddy woods conditions. They work well for that, just slow.

Haha, totally. I'd love to see a guy rollin' a T4R with an ATV winch and a half dozen pulleys.

I think it will be fine. If you ever feel it is struggling, remember that a winch pulls it's best and has the most mechanical advantage with most of your drum spooled out (only one or two wraps left) and has less power, the fuller your winch is with line.

I put in an 8000 # Ramsey.....with a good extension line , straps, tree sling and block....you double back to your truck you double your power as the boys stated previous.

Just remember as the wraps increase on the drum your pulling power goes down. If you can afford synthetic its the way to go.

I'd go with the Superwinch as long as it's in good condition and the wire rope won't need replaced anytime soon (steel and synthetic both aren't cheap).

I've had a Warn m8000 that was tough as nails and some experience with a Bulldog (one of the cheaper newer brands out lately), and can say with 100% confidence that paying a little extra for one of the big 3 (warn, Ramsey, Superwinch) and even milemarker, is going to be worth it if your truly going to be using it a good bit.

8000 may be on weeeeeeee bit low side but the times that you'll have worry about that can be always solved with the snatch block you should be carrying anyways.

A 10k winch would be awfullllly heavy on the front of a T4R.

8500 is just fine and there is nothing wrong with slow when winching. And as Pat mentioned the 8500 is only on the wraps closest to the drum.
