Supercharger wine?

Why would you flush your transmission? Toyota doesn't recommend this as necessary. I'm in the same boat as 1engineer (shameless name drop :)), why try to second guess the engineers who designed the vehicle?

It's cheap, easy maintenance. I was adding in a secondary cooler so the lines were already disconnected and extended.

I had the whine pretty bad at 88k miles. Toyota ended up replacing the nylon timing guides and timing assembly under my platinum extended warranty. Would have been about 2 grand out of warranty.

That being said I think the thing would've been fine (but noisy) for many miles to come.

Joneseyy I wish I would have had you listen to mine at the overland festival. Timing job doesn't seem too bad on one of these though. Just a good many parts to replace.

I still haven't found a definitive break-down of what WS ATF exactly is (some sources suggest a modified Dexron VI, but its sketchy information) so I am not entirely confident in recommending anything but Toyota WS ATF right now (not that I doubt Amsoil, I run a lot of their products in my vehicle, just not the ATF.) Not to mention running anything other WS ATF will void your warranty should you have a transmission issue under your warranty period.

I've made a lot of comments on this forum regarding Toyota's "Lifetime" claim for the WS ATF being absolute crap. That being said, I wouldn't worry about changing the transmission fluid though unless you're around 100k or towing/severe driving conditions (in which case refer to the owner's manual, I believe it says 60k, followed by 30k intervals for severe duty.)

We've seen some of the secondary air pumps being extremely loud and whiny on some Tacomas. I wonder if they are engaging for some reason under acceleration and this could be the "Supercharger Whine" noise that is being described?

Getting the timing cover off is going to be a royal PITA. The dealer pulled my motor, but mostly bc they had no idea what was wrong and tore it down to inspect everything. I think to do it engine-in the water pump, ps pump, and alternator have to come off, as well as maybe the radiator for more space to work.

Living in hilly western PA there's a lot of gear changing and a lot of time pulling with the converter unlocked. At 50k I wanted to know that I had some fresh ATF in there and also added a B&M cooler for extra insurance. Coming back to an autotragic from driving manuals I think they're all made of glass and just a ticking time bomb.

I am by no means looking forward to such a job. Hopefully it'll last 150k before it becomes a major issue. Was yours a guide issue or a tensioner issue? I saw that there is an access hole in the timing cover to replace the tensioner. I think it's a $60 part and would just require removal of the belt and moving the oil cooler lines out of the way.

The guide(s) were worn abnormally for mileage. Think they replaced it all as a CYA measure.
