same experience for me with the POR-15.. i used it on my lower radiator support and a few other areas.. it literally came off in a thin layer less than a year later.. the same surface rusting that was there before was still there, nothing got coated or converted. It is quite possible that if I did some better prep before applying it would maybe work better... but isn't the whole idea to be able to go right over and not worry about it?

Not to mention spraying a rattle can is a lot quicker and easier when you're under the rig trying to get into tight places vs getting some brushes and going to town with the por-15 tar.

I have yet to apply the surface shield though so I can't really compare directly. Just my previous experience with the por-15 stuff.

POR 15 is great IF you can remove all surface rust. Prep is CRITICAL. But I don’t have that kind of time to spend on prep work. Also, a simple chip in the POR 15 will start rust and it will grow under the coating. Partsgeek on YouTube does a good job explaining POR 15 VS lanolin based product. SO, I just soak with fluid film. It’s easy and takes little time. I’ve seen a guy on YouTube that sprays his frame with WD40 with good results. I like fluid film because it’s environmentally friendly and gets good reviews. Surface shield is a similar lanolin based product and I’ll be using that too. Rust sucks and I find Fluid Film to work very well.

Interesting. I’ll try this Fluid Film next time. As far as POR-15, I think a lot of people take too literally the “Paint Over Rust” thing. You have to get 95% of the rust off — especially anything resembling scale — before using it. Then, remember that it’s a 2-step process — you want to use their Metal Prep first. I believe it slightly etches the surface so the POR can really grip. I had been using it for years on some vintage cars, and it has worked great on our two 4Runners so far even with our salty winters, but to be sure it’s very messy and hard to work with.

I agree 100% on the prep being the reason it didn't work for me.. but with regards to taking their claim too literal.. .I mean that is how they advertise it.. so why wouldn't people take it literal? lol

I know. I think they do themselves a huge disservice advertising it that way. You do want to have _some_ small amount of rust, or it doesn't stick. But I imagine many of their customers get needlessly frustrated when they attempt to simply paint over thick rust expecting a magical cure. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is ...
