Surprise with my Toyota oil filter?

So I was just opening the boxes of a couple of oil filters (Toyota) I got last week to make sure they were in good condition and in one of the boxes out fell a washer, which looks like the one for the oil pan.

Was this a mistake? or is this something new? Only one of the 2 filters had this washer.

Depends on where you buy them. Some dealers put the washers in the box, probably to make sure their own technicians change them when they do an oil change.

I've gotten all my filters either from Partznet or Sunnyside Toyota on eBay.

The dealer I buy my filter from always throws in a washer at no charge. What are they, like $.20 each?

Retail price is more like $1 . I never received a free one in the box yet.

My dealer charges $ 4.99 for filter and $1.29 for washer. Isn't that something. I'm thinking about getting alluminum washers from auto store, which in turn will prompt me to buy aftermarket filter. Great marketing, Toyota. No wonder why sales are down...

Partznet sells the filters for $4.11 and washer for .80.


Although I will admit in 5 years with 93k, I've never changed the washer.

Nothing to be alarmed at...they just threw in a free drain plug washer.

That's what I do too...I put a washer in everyone of my oil filter boxes so I won't forget to replace it.

Holy crap...$1.00 for those things, prob. cost a whole $.05 to produce. I can usually find a coupon for $4.25 for the filter and a free washer at one of the local dealers.
