Suspension question

I have a question that i havent seen answered anywhere. why are the the 5100 and a handful of shocks being recommended. If all i was looking for was a 2 inch lift couldnt i get monroe 71348 for the front and monroe 37238 for the rear?

heres my thought process: the 5100's are load assist adjustable but at the lowest ratig where the two inch lift would be its collapsed measurement is 13.23”- and extended is 18.68”

the monroes 71348 collapsed are 13.5” and extended is 17.125”

aside from the measurable difference ( 0.23 inch difference collapsed and 1.5 inches difference extended)

what problems could arise? why wont they fit (cause i know someone will say that )

the shock is not what gives you the lift. Its the coil that gives lift!

I'm going to comment not on the numbers and logic of that but on the monroe shocks themselves.

It's sad that in Canada it is hard to find much other than the monroes. I have had some experience with them over the years on different cars and my opinion is that they are not very good. Far inferior to toyota OEM, and far inferior to the Bilstein 4600 which will cost you about the same. (check out essex distributors in Canada for Bilstien) If cost is the issue, just get the 4600s. They are a good stock replacement.

I hate to admit I have put Monroes best struts on our winter cars because of lack of any other real option but they are a poor shock for the money (in my opinion). Your 4runner deserves better.

the shock is not what gives you the lift. Its the coil that gives lift!

You are correct and i wasnt assuming that the shocks did. I should have specified that I will be putting 880's in the front and 906's in the rear

the specs i was referring to was the distance travelled by each shock from full compression to full extension.

im not a expert in shocks. But to my logic, you wont get more or less travel if you run those coils? unfortunately i cannot relate as i ran 5100 with eibachs and now i run icon 2.5

But since you called me out, I'll comment. You are asking, I believe, if you can run a stock height replacement shock (like the monroe, Bilstien 4600, trekmaster etc.) with a 2 inch lift. I am going to say yes you can, but there may be some limitations that I don't know about. Others will know more. Search the suspension threads.

I run the stock height Bilstien 4600s with 99 talls in front and OME 2906s in the rear which is a 2+ inch lift for my 4runner. Seems fine for what I do and I believe others have this set up too.

As for the monroe. I feel they are poor quality, considering they are not exactly cheap in Canada. You will find the Billies from the supplier I mentioned for very similar money. The quality difference is apparent holding the two in your hands. Others have commented negatively about the monroes on their 4runner. I can comment negatively about the monroe on my winter car!

I know it's more money, but I really love my 2.5 inch Old Man Emu suspension kit. I'm in Canada and a shop close to where I live stocks them. Great build quality but a stiffer ride. I'm glad I spent the extra $$$ on it. I wheel/offroad and have heard from other offroad guys that monroe isn't as great for withstanding trail abuse over time, if that's the sort of thing you want to do with your 4runner.

You don't need taller coils to get a lift with 5100s up front. You just move the ring up to put more preload on the coils. You can keep the stock coils

Jeeps in general have a bigger selection for off road parts. Unfortunately that is how it is.

But dont get fooled, we have many options to. There are other options besides toytex, bilstein or ome. You have icon, king, fox, sway away.... but you are talking about a different price bracket.

Also, you could always measure out your shock, and find a shock in similar dimensions and install that

Jeep to the offroad world is what Chevy is to the performance world. They have the most options, more competition and cheaper and more reviews parts because of this.

The offroad community for jeeps is a hell of a lot larger than Toyota. Mainly later model Toyota's.

Well **** it lol so i got the 880 front and 906 rear with 5100. along with a bunch of other things to do. ill let you how it goes
