suspension...

I'm looking to lift my truck. I have read the subforum of the suspension lifts faq's. Few questions though...

btw, going to 275/70/17 tires. Method fat five wheels.

1. I was planning to do the spacer lift. I don't 4wheel drive. I do have the xreas. Is this a total waste? Or should I do it right with a suspension replacement? If so, what do you recommend?

2. Do I have to regear? One installation place said I might. I'm already aware of the speedo being off.

Thanks for your advise!

1) For what you want, spacer lift is adequate and will save you money.

2) No

Good luck.

Thanks. Will the conversion really slow down the power? I don't care of the mpg loss. However, I do like the power. I have the v6.

No. I have not experienced any loss, or feel in power. I have lost mpg's. I average 12.9 mpg in the city.

I really can't speak to the V6, though I've heard, that going up in size yields a noticeable difference in the 1GR. I think everyone notices they lose a step going up as well as takes a hit on fuel economy, but look at it like this... Do the lift and tires, and if you feel like you want to re-gear after driving it, then re-gear. I'm running 33x12.5R20 and I still don't feel like re-gearing is necessary.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you got anything else.

That's a steep drop. Hope it doesn't suffer that much.

Not to threadjack. . .but 12.9 in a v6?! YIKES

I agree.

After looking at your album, I think it's safe to say that my milage wont drop as low as yours did. I'm just looking for a mild lift and tire increase. You have much more going on with mods then my truck. Which, I do like what you did.

My brother has 285/70/17 on his '05 with the V6 and it drives fine.

Power loss? Yes, some. MPG loss? Yes. Cost of bigger tires.

Do it!

edit: and he has stock gearing.

Here's what I did (w/ X-REAS and rear air)

Went with the FJ cruiser springs. Got a bit of lift for about $100 (used take offs)

Then I went with the spacer about 6 months later and that settled in nicely for a few years, cost was $50 or so.

Easy cheap fixes to level out the 4Runner and get you over making any mods, particularly if you do it yourself.

Once you're loading up even more weight, you talk about ripping out the X-REAS and throwing in some new springs. I'm looking at some 885/886's along with some Bilstein 5100's. That'll bide my time until I feel like changing out the rear air suspension w/ a spring & air bag kit.

I appreciate the advice.

I've heard of people having good success going to a 255-series tire -- I think 255/75/17 works out to be somewhere around 32.5" tall. You end up with minimal (if any) loss in MPG due to less unsprung weight, and less power loss.

I lost about 0.5mpg going to the 255-75-17.

Remember when you upsize tires that your speedometer and odometer will read slow. You actually go more miles per tank than it says. Based on the millage from my GPS, my mpg was the same or slightly better when I switched to the 255/75/17s.

How many miles on your 4runner? Have you checked for leaking shocks? If lower millage and no leaks, the spacer option is the way to go (fj coils are a nice addition as well).

I just purchased it, and it's a certified pre owned. So, I'm sure it was all checked out. It has 49k on it now.

Interesting. This is great info. How does this tire look as compared to 275/70/17?

Thank you for all of your help. People like you make a forum a good forum.

You're welcome. I'm glad to help any way that I can and share my experiences with new owners.

I'm trying to foster a healthier attitude on this forum and take it back to it's roots like when I first got here, instead of all the "search police" stuff.

We were all new at one point, and it took me the same amount of time to answer your question as it would have for my to tell you to search for the answer.

Sure it get's annoying seeing and answering the same type of questions daily on here, but I'd prefer people follow the lead of our senior members and just help the ones seeking help and go about their business. Animosity and smart-ass type stuff just sends good information forums down the toilet. I don't want to see T4R.org, head down that path. I like this forum :)

Good luck with your mods and post pics when you get em. Any questions, feel free to PM me.

I would definitely go with the spacer lift and maybe fj coils. If you are interested, I have a set of Daystar 1.5" lift spacers for the rear for sale, would do $30 shipped. You can get the fronts for $40-$80 depending on how much lift you're after. Pm me if interested.
