SUV Tents for a 4,000 mile trip?

Ok so i'm taking a long road trip to the western part of the US (Details here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/90074-4runner-has-150-000-miles-want-take-4-000-mile-trip.html) And was wondering what kind of tent would be good to attach to the back of the 4runner? It will need to be large. Also can this be tied down on the standard roof rack? Or will it be better to keep it inside during transportation. I've never put anything on the roof rack before so i dont know if it will get ruined or if there is a protective case or something i need. Thanks!

Hmmm, let me know what you find. I'm going lo-fi on my trip...a regular pop-up tent some nights, and sleeping in the truck the rest of the nights. I also have a large tarp and extra tent poles to make a sort of shade set-up. Like below...

I'm gonna try it out at the beach in a week or two....

If you are going to be on the road that long, then there is one consideration that should be placed above all others. That is ease of setup. Pick the option that is easiest to set up. If there are no SUV tens that meet this description, you should go for a ground tent and some sort of awning.

K.C.- Those are great examples. How big is everything when it's all folded up? I was actually looking at tailgate tents since i got 5 people (can open the back of 4runner and it leads into a tent)

Catfish-That's the most economical tent setup ever! That's probably what i would do if i were by myself too, but since i got 5 people we are all willing to split the cost of a nice tailgate tent rather than spent the $300-400 per night for hotel rooms in some of these parks.

Mr. Leary-You are absolutely right. I only just started shopping around, but the tent will have to be put up and packed up every time we use it. Ok i get it. At first i thought those were all your trucks! Thanks for the links i found what they look like all folded up in those threads!

Those ones are also pretty pricey! It's $800+ for those rooftop tents! (Still cheaper than hotels though)

I will say that I LOVE my RTT. ITs great to get up off the ground in the summer time.

I was thinking about that actually. This is my first time seeing this kind of tent and i think it closes with draw strings around the entire back of the suv starting just above the tailpipe and over the cargo door. I dont think you're supposed to have the car on anyways, i wouldn't or else you've made a gas chamber instead of a tent!
