Hey y'all, I just bought a 2006 4runner, pretty excited about it, the engine is strong and the suspension is smooth, which totally matched the 170,000 miles on the dashboard. Then I tested the 4x4 and I heard and felt it engaged so everything was golden. A few days later, I was messing with it and realized that no light for the 4lo, diff lock or dac would light up while using them. I started by thinking the bulbs might have been blown or maybe something was unplugged. But then the worst happened: I realized that the odometer was not adding any mileage. In other words, the odometer was reading exactly the same number after I drove 50 miles back home. When I was driving testing it, I looked at the mileage once and then focused on all the mechanical, the speedometer, temperature and everything else in the instrument cluster worked just fine so I thought everything was fine.
Putting all of these red flags together, I looked with more detailed to the instrument cluster and it does not seem to have the "drawings" or options for all of the 4wd equipment on it. This made me conclude that the previous owner might have switched the dashboard for a 2wd one, with that 170,00 mileage. If this is true, my question is why the odometer is not moving, although both trip A and trip B do add up mileage as I drive.
Also, my concern is getting in legal issues with the dmv eventually once the smog check comes since the odometer will read the same two years from now. I would like to get a 4wd instrument cluster in order for me to know what is and what is not engaged (4wd wise). I do not know what road to take. Dealership? Private mechanic? diy? I am a colleg student and bought this amazing 4runner with some savings and my old car's value. Thus the cheapest option will be the best, but I also would like to do the most convenient.
At this point I'm not too concerned about what the car's real mileage could be as it does have a strong engine, transmission and suspension.
