Synthetic oil with which oil filter?

About to do my first oil change on my 08' sr5 4x4 and was wondering what everyone here is using? Where do you buy your synthetic oil at? Walmart? what about the oil filter? Would you happen to have a part # for the oil filter? Also, where do you buy the crush washer at? Toyota? online somewhere?

Walmart is great for oil and have excellent prices. I use OEM Toyota filters. The ones you get from the dealership are made in Thailand and look good. Crush washers from the dealer as well.

I get Mobile1 from Costco, and Purolator filters from pepboys.

Wal-mart is good for the oil.

The dealer or the chain parts store that carries Purolator or a Napa is a good place to get a filter.

Toyota filters are very good. The higher tier Purolator (PureOne) filters are good as are the Napa Gold filters. They'll have a crush washer too.

If you want a great filter, cheap, pick up a Motorcraft FL400S while at Wally world. (Before anyone bashes me for suggesting a Ford filter study up, I'm not making that up!) It's a little larger, about like a PL20195/25230 Purolator which several people use.

I use Valvoline Synthetic 5W-30 along with B&G and OEM Toyota filter. I buy my oil from Autozone.

Valvoline maxlife blend and full synthetic
Castrol Syntec
Penzoil Platinum & Ultra

I do yearly oil changes or 7,500 miles whichever comes first.

Oil filters I've used:

Mobil 1 Extended Protection
Fram Extended Guard (XG3614)
Purolator PureOne
K&N

My next oil change will be Shell Rotella T5 Synthetic Blend 10w-30 1 gallon + 2 quarts Penzoil Platinum or Ultra in the Spring.

I know. It does fit, the bypass pressure is around 8-11psi IIRC and it'll work fine. I'll PayPal you the $4 if it doesn't fit Watch Wal-mart, seriously, they usually have this filter and when it goes on sale they let them go for $4.xx.

Thanks. Ok so if you can let your oil changes go for 7,500 miles, what do you do when the maint light comes on around 3k or whatever millage it goes on at? do you just reset it? How do you keep track of when to do an oil change? do you just write it down? Also, do you have a DIY for an oil change on the differentials?

I have a book and I write it down, with 3 cars I forget things, but I don't know anyone else that does this. I also, use the second trip meter for the oil change. The first trip meter I use for gas fill ups and the second I leave for the oil. I change at 5,000 miles. When I wonder where it is, I hit the button for the trip meter. It might say 4,288, meaning I have about 700 miles to go before I should worry about the change. I do this on both 4Runners.

Also, I forget to re-set the maint light for the oil, when it comes on, I re-set it and forget until it comes on again.

For years I have only gone with the oil filter manufactured for the car company. Honda's only had Honda filters, Toyota only had Toyota filters. When I bought the 04 4Runner used in 2008 I changed the oil the next day and used a Puralator PureOne and have been fairly impressed with them. After 2 or 3 changes I noticed a difference in the oil, I think the old owner did not change the oil that often, well not as often as I do.

I still have quite a few Toyota filters for my 2001, when I run out, I may go with the PureOne.

As for buying items, I buy the Toyota parts on-line at the cheapest place I can find. I buy at least a dozen crush washers when I order and I use them in all 3 of my Toyotas. The oil, Mobil 1 I buy at Costco when I have a coupon, Pep Boys when there is a coupon, or at Wal Mart when I don't have a coupon. I also have gotten coupons from links that other members have posted. Right now I have about 29 quarts of Mobil 1 and 12 quarts of Castrol GTX (for my older Toyota Previa). So, I stock up, when they are at a certain price. For me, $4 a quart for Mobil 1 is really hard to beat, when it is that price, I stock up on it.

I track oil changes on trip odometer 'B', I use 'A' for gas mileage tracking... All the chain parts stores giveaway oil reminder stickers like a shop puts on your car.

As for the Maint light, I use like Peter does which is to say I pretty much don't use it.

The maintenance light is a good reminder for rotating the tires and not much else.

I use Mobil 1 and usually buy it at Walmart or anywhere it's on sale. The washers you can get just about anywhere. I use the OEM filters and buy them at my local stealership. They sell them at a discount if you buy 3 or more.

Where do you find to buy the crush washers online? All the sources I have found charge $10-12 shipping except Rockauto that is slightly less but doesn't have those for the differential or transfer case?.

For me, $4 a quart for Mobil 1 is really hard to beat, when it is that price, I stock up on it.

Costco currently has a coupon out, $9 off on 6 quarts of Mobil 1. Not sure if that will be the $4 for a quart of Mobil 1, but I bet it will come pretty close to it. The coupon should be good till early November.
